Man hit, injured crossing street
By T&D StaffTuesday, August 19, 2008A Las Vegas truck driver is recovering after being struck by a passing vehicle as he tried crossing an Orangeburg road on Saturday.
Police say the 46-year-old was hospitalized Saturday night when he was hit by a minivan travelling east on Chestnut Street.
Around 9:05 p.m., police were dispatched to Chestnut Street after a concerned citizen reported a pedestrian versus car accident.
When police arrived, they found a man laying on the roadway “bleeding profusely” from the head, according to an ODPS incident report. An ambulance was called.
An Orangeburg woman at the scene told officers she had struck the man, the report said. The 51-year-old said she was travelling in the left-hand lane when the collision occurred. She told police she did not see the man.
The officers noted in the report that there was a light rain at the time of the crash.
Witnesses told police the trucker had parked his tractor-trailer in the median and crossed to find someone to ask directions to Highway 301. When the man was making the return trip to his truck, he was hit by the van.
Investigators believe the van struck the trucker in his hip area, causing his head to crash into the windshield of the vehicle, the report said. He then rolled on top and was carried about 30 feet before tumbling to the roadway, the report indicates.
Investigators said on Monday the man was conscious but not alert enough for a statement. Police say he has non-life threatening injuries.
No charges are expected to filed, police say.
