Investigators are asking the public for information regarding the fatal shooting of a Charleston Highway man on June 28.

Erick Marion Dickson, 27, of 2461 Charleston Hwy., Orangeburg, died one day after he was taken to the Regional Medical Center to be treated for gunshot wounds he received in an early morning shooting.

A neighbor of the victim told investigators that at around 9 p.m. that night, he heard a gunshot just prior to seeing Dickson leave as a passenger in a truck.

At the front of Dickson’s residence, investigators found a large amount of blood, a shell casing and two bullet holes.

At the hospital, the wounded man was under sedation when deputies arrived to question him.

Dickson never regained consciousness, however, and died at about 6 a.m. on June 29.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office at 803-534-3550 or CrimeStoppers of the Midlands at 1-888-274-6372.

In other reports:

* An Orangeburg man was charged Thursday with armed robbery after a man was accosted while driving on a county road.

Larry Johnson, 18, of 170 Gold Drive, was charged after he turned himself in to county deputies at the Orangeburg-Calhoun Regional Law Enforcement Complex.

Johnson’s charge stems from a robbery that occurred around 11:30 p.m. near the junction of Landfill Road and Hwy. 601.

A 49-year-old Orangeburg County man said a vehicle with four men inside cut off his vehicle, blocking him in. Three of the men exited their vehicle armed with handguns, according to the incident report. They ordered the victim out of the car and onto the ground. The victim refused, however, because he said he feared “that he would be shot if he went to the ground,” according to the report.

The gunmen then took the victim’s wallet and got back into their vehicle before speeding away.

Deputies are seeking warrants against at least two other subjects believed to have been involved.

* A Navy Drive Crime Watch member called Thursday to report damage to the neighborhood Crime Watch signs.

The Crime Watch member said several of the area’s signs were pulled out of the ground and left lying by the road.

The member gave deputies a description the two men believed to have been involved.

* An Orangeburg woman reported a suspicious vehicle Thursday that deputies discovered had been reported stolen.

Deputies were told about a white 1994 Ford Crown Victoria located in a wooded area off Alva Street. When they checked, the VIN came back as being stolen from the jurisdiction of South Carolina State University.

* An Orangeburg man charged earlier this week with destroying an Amelia Street business’s air-conditioning unit has been charged with committing a similar crime last week.

Stafford Bernard Brown Jr., 30, of 179 Treadwell St., was charged with malicious injury to real property in connection with the destruction of two air-conditioning units found stripped at University Wash and Dry, a Lowman Street washeteria.

The two Lowman Street units are said to be worth about $5,000 each.

On Wednesday, Orangeburg Municipal Judge Barney Houser set bond on Brown at $25,000 after he was charged with grand larceny, a charge tied to the destruction of an Amelia Street business’s air-conditioning unit.

Houser said he set the steep bond because Brown was already out of jail on a previous bond for another charge related to the damage of another air-conditioning unit.

Brown was charged with malicious injury to real property on Aug. 15 after police spotted a suspicious character lying on the ground between two vehicles at Rhoad’s Cleaners. The screws to the air-conditioning unit at that business were found on the ground beside the unit.

Brown got out on bond for that charge on Saturday.

This latest charge stems from two York-brand units that were completely dismantled at the Lowman Street washeteria. On Aug. 14, the owner called police when he noticed the damage. Police noted the units were mounted on platforms behind the business.

Houser then set Brown’s bond.

Police are reviewing other crimes to determine if Brown had any connection to them.
