Bowman streetscape project to begin soon; nature park completion on hold

Mayor Zelda Pelzer also reported completion of the town’s Nature Park is on hold pending receipt of another grant to finish the project.
Bowman Police Chief Allen Kinsey reported Officer White accepted a position with the Town of Holly Hill and Officer Eric Covell is still under a physician’s care after injuring his hand while attending the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy.
Kinsey noted a slight increase in crime in July and credited his department, along with other agencies, in bringing down one of the largest counterfeiting rings in the Southeast at the end of June.
Kinsey has said the ring, which was being run out of Orangeburg, Clarendon and Sumter, was distributing computer-generated payroll checks that looked authentic.
Bowman police arrested Charlene Robinson, 46, of 1305 Glenfield Apts., Orangeburg; Stephanie Johnson, 33, of 130 Beacon Tree Road, Bowman and Ruthie Ann Green, 25, of 3974 Charleston Hwy., Orangeburg, in connection with the counterfeiting. Robinson and Green were charged with two counts of forgery each. Johnson is facing four counts of forgery, Kinsey said.
In other business:
* Council denied a request by a group to use the town’s meeting hall facilities for church services, citing liability issues.
* Clerk Yvonne Lewis presented the town’s financial report as of July 31, indicating a general fund balance of $167,025.05; a municipal fund balance of $12,444.24 and sewer department revenue of $35,979.04.
* A resident requested placement of a streetlight in a dark area of Reevesville Road.
