Jarvis Brothers' concert scheduled Tuesday
Monday, August 25, 2008The Jarvis Brothers have long been delighting audiences with their soulful sounds and harmony.
The Orangeburg-based a cappella quintet will be in concert at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 26, at Stevenson Auditorium. The concert is sponsored by the Downtown Orangeburg Revitalization Association.
About 100 tickets were sold through Friday, Aug. 22. There are about 300 additional tickets available.
Advance tickets are available at the DORA office at 152 Market St. in downtown Orangeburg.
Reserved seats on the main floor are $15, reserved balcony seats are $10, boxes of six seats are $150 and boxes of four seats are $100. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.
The Jarvis Brothers are widely known for their four- and five-part Jubliee-style harmony, much of it steeped in the traditional gospel spiritual genre that took root and thrived in the deep South.
The performance promises traditional fare with some new material thrown in the mix.
The original band of brothers — Ulysses, Reginald, Anthony, Donald and Rogers — performed together for more than 35 years until Reginald’s death in March 2007. However, out of that family loss came the addition to the group 15 months ago of Reginald’s nephew, Cornell.
The group won the Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Governor’s Award for the Arts in 2005 and has performed in the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., and the Apollo Theater in New York.
