Two Denmark men have been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of a 88-year-old shopkeeper, the State Law Enforcement Division said in a statement Saturday.

Jason Jemal Wilson, 18, of 63 Wheat St., and Mark Anthony Brown Jr., 18, of 64 Carolyn Court, are accused of attempting to rob Alfred E. Myers’ store Thursday afternoon. Myers was shot in the back during the incident and later died.

According to the SLED statement, Brown issued a voluntary written statement to authorities following his arrest, detailing the events of the incident.

Myers’ wife, Jessie, said Saturday that she didn’t know anything about the arrests and was waiting for authorities to give her an update.

SLED spokeswoman Kathryn Richardson would not comment beyond the written statement because the investigation was ongoing.

The Bamberg County Sheriff’s Department said Saturday that jail booking photos of the arrested men would not be available before Tuesday.

" This is such a sad and unfortunate incident for all parties involved, and it just break my heart to hear of such a tragedy. I had the liberty of teaching both these young men and I truly can say that one was quiet and the other my not be a suprise, however I am hurt and concerned. My prayers to the family and for the two young men.
