Denmark Tech hires former Tar Heel Donald Williams

DENMARK -- Former North Carolina Tar Heel standout Donald Williams was named head coach of the Denmark Tech basketball team Tuesday.

Williams was the MVP of the 1993 NCAA Champion North Carolina Tar Heels.

A press conference to announce the move is scheduled for Thursday at noon at Denmark Tech.

Brimmer Named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Volleyball Rookie-of-the-Week

Virginia Beach, VA — South Carolina State freshman Bria Brimmer has been named this week’s Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), Rookie of the Week as announced by the league on Monday.

Brimmer, a 5-6, setter from Austin, TX/Connally High School was named to the All-Tournament team after recording 102 assists and 21 digs in four matches at the High Point Tournament. The setter notched three 20-plus assist performances, averaging 25.5 assists per match.

Claflin Volleyball

Lady Panthers fall to Albany State

After taking the first game, Claflin (1-5) dropped three straight to the Lady Rams 25-22, 18-25, 13-25, 18-25.

The Lady Rams were led by Rachell Anderson, Eugenia Key, and Bonnie Salary with 8 kills each. Davisha Moore came through defensively with 25 digs while Carolina Ribeiro had 26 assists.

Tashia Stewart led the offensive attack for the Lady Panthers with a game high 14 kills. Toi Haynes-Shelman collected 24 assists. Defensively Shavonna Andrews and Felicia Corin tallied 11 digs each.

Claflin will play host to Fort Valley State on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Moore opens tournament with 78

ROARING GAP, N.C. -- Orangeburg native Marion Moore turned in a 7-over par performance in the first round of the Carolinas Senior Amateur Golf Tournament. Moore is tied for 68th and is 13 shots behind leader Paul Simson. Moore will begin the second round of play at 11:45 today.

Varsity Volleyball

Lady Eagles beat Lake Hawks

NORTH -- In a Region 4-A varsity match on Tuesday, North defeated Blackville-Hilda 25-15, 25-27, 25-11.

Leading the Lady Eagles (2-1) were Erica Jamison with 15 points, three blocks and three digs, Alexandria Roach with 10 points and four spikes, Miasha Dixon with 19 points, Diana Linder with 16 points and Cassidy Welch had 11 points.

On Monday, North defeated Swansea 25-13, 25-16 and 25-19. Yneikwa Yon had 25 serving points and Diana Linder and Alexandria Roach each had seven serving points each.

North plays host to Fox Creek at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

O-W falls to Dutch Fork

Ronnesia Green had 10 points for O-W, but it wasn’t enough for the Bruinettes who lost 25-21, 25-22, 25-12 to Dutch Fork Tuesday.

Shameeka Randolph added five kills, three blocks and six points for O-W, and Kimberly Henderson had eight digs. O-W (0-2) will host a tri-match against Swansea and Fairfield-Central this afternoon at 5:30.

Branchville tops Woodland

BYRDS -- Class A’s top-ranked Lady Yellow Jackets defeated the Lady Wolverines in four games 26-24, 15-25, 25-16, 25-15.

Leading Branchville was Miranda Nichols with 22 points, nine aces and 15 assists. Chenise Stokes came up with 12 points, two aces, two assists and a kill. Courtney Simmons had 13 kills and two blocks while Jasmine Williams chipped in with six kills and a block.

Woodland was led by Bobbie Blake with 18 points. Angel Elmore finished the match with 15 assists with six kills and five blocks.

Woodland (2-2) plays host to Barnwell at 5 p.m. on Thursday. Branchville will travel to Wade Hampton on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Orangeburg Prep knocks off Heathwood Hall

The Lady Indians defeated Heathwood Hall in three games 25-16, 25-14, 25-15.

Annie Westlund led OPS with seven aces, 12 assists and two kills. Brandy McRae had three aces, nine kills and a block. Kayla Mims posted two aces, eight kills and a block. Sallie Covington pitched in with seven kills and a block.

Orangeburg Prep (4-3) will face Holly Hill Academy on the road at 5 p.m.

JV Volleyball

Dutch Fork downs O-W

Dutch Fork defeated O-W 25-14, 11-25, 25-19 Thursday.

Shardasia Gadson had six points and three assists, Carrissa Waddel had five service points and Nyilah Myers had five service points, two blocks and three kills. O-W (1-1) will be at home Thursday to take on Lexington.

Lady Yellow Jackets beat Woodland

BYRDS -- Branchville swept the Lady Wolverines in three games 25-14, 25-18, 15-10.

Caroline Murray led the Lady Jackets with 11 points and five assists. Kimberly Garvin had six points and five aces while Micaela Ecklar added two kills.

Branchville goes to Wade Hampton on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Orangeburg Prep downs Heathwood Hall

The Lady Indians extended their winning streak to five after defeating Heathwood Hall 20-25, 25-15, 25-13.

OPS looks to extend their streak to six on Thursday at 4 p.m. when the travel to Holly Hill Academy.
