The Lowcountry Classic, a longtime black college football rivalry featuring the Bulldogs of South Carolina State University and the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman University, will be held in Charleston this weekend, Sept. 11-13.

The signature event of the third annual Lowcountry Classic will be held at The Citadels Johnson Hagood Stadium on Saturday.

The football game and full slate of other scheduled activities, however, are not what makes this weekend an “Event with a Purpose,” S.C. State officials say. The game and surrounding festivities are designed to raise funds for need-based scholarships at S.C. State.

Activities will kick off with the Sponsor Reception at 6 p.m. on Thursday at the Charleston Maritime Center, 10 Wharfside St. Charleston. Those who will be attendance include Maurice Washington, chairman of S.C. State’s Board of Trustees; S.C. State President Dr. George E. Cooper; S.C. State Athletics Director Charlene Johnson; Bulldogs Head Football Coach Oliver “Buddy” Pough and other community leaders.

Events for Friday include a golf tournament, the President’s and Chairman’s Reception and Silent Auction and the HBCU Seafood Jam.

The golf tournament, sponsored by the Charleston Chapter of the S.C. State University National Alumni Association, will begin at 9 a.m. at the Charleston Municipal Golf Course, 2110 Maybank Hwy., Charleston.

The Lowcountry Classic III President’s and Chairman’s Reception and Silent Auction will be held from 6-8 p.m. in the ballroom of the Charleston Marriott Hotel, 170 Lockwood Blvd., Charleston. The reception will feature musical performances by legendary jazz musician Gerald Albright.

Ticket prices are $25 for general admission and can be purchased from The Citadel Ticket Office iand S.C. State’s Ticket Office.

The HBCU Seafood Jam, sponsored by the Charleston Chapter of SCSUNAA, will be held from 7-11 p.m. at the Charleston Yacht Club, 17 Lockwood Dr., Charleston. Tickets are $30. To obtain tickets, contact Tim Taylor at timothytaylor18@bellsouth.net.

On tap for Saturday are the President’s Fitness Walk, College Recruitment Fair, Lowcountry Classic III football game and the Scholarship Benefit Concert featuring Mary J. Blige.

The President’s Fitness Walk, part of Cooper’s Health Initiative, will begin at 6 a.m. in Riverfront Park. Those interested and would can contact Erica Prioleau, director of university relations and marketing, 803-378-1407.

The College Recruitment Fair will be held from 9-11 a.m. in Burke High School Auditorium, 244 President St., Charleston. The college recruitment fair will offer on-the-spot admission and scholarships. High school seniors are encouraged to bring their official or unofficial high school transcripts and national examination scores to take full advantage of these opportunities.

The college fair is sponsored by S.C. State’s Office of Admissions, Recruitment and Scholarships and the Charleston Chapter of SCSUNAA. For more information, call S.C. State’s admissions office at 803-536-7186 or 800-260-5956.

The Lowcountry Classic III game will be held at 4 p.m. at Johnson Hagood Stadium.

The Scholarship Benefit Concert featuring Mary J. Blige is set for 8 p.m .on Saturday at the North Charleston Coliseum. Ticket prices start at $44 for general admission and are available at the Coliseum Box Office or Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.com.
