Statehouse security test hurts worker, wrecks van
By The Associated Press Saturday, September 20, 2008COLUMBIA, S.C. - A test of a new Statehouse garage security system left a state Bureau of Protective Services worker slightly injured and damaged her van when a traffic barricade triggered as she drove across.
Spokesmen for the state’s Department of Public Safety and Budget and Control board on Friday confirmed the Aug. 23 incident.
The $6 million system is designed to keep the public out of the Statehouse garage and control garage-level access to Capitol Complex buildings.
Board spokesman Mike Sponhour said a wedge that limits unauthorized traffic wasn’t set properly and struck the van, causing about $1,500 in damage. The worker missed a couple of days of work.
Sponhour says contractors have fixed that problem.
