Police say they’re preparing to make an arrest in the shooting of an Orangeburg man.

The man, who was treated for a gunshot wound to the left hand, said a female acquaintance shot him as he was trying to keep her from pointing the gun at more vital parts on Saturday.

“The investigation is still ongoing, and I will add that an arrest is imminent,” Orangeburg Department of Public Safety Capt. Mike Adams said.

The Orangeburg man said the incident began at his job, where the woman caused a disturbance, according to an ODPS incident report. He said she then pulled a black gun from the red bag in the back of her vehicle’s trunk and waved it around in the parking lot.

The man said he drove home after she struck the window of his vehicle with the gun.

He ran inside to grab some underwear so he could spend the night at a friend’s house and was walking out the door when he saw the woman drive up, the report said. He said he watched her as she went into the trunk of her car to once again pull a gun out of the red bag.

The man told police the woman walked up to him with an air of authority, so he asked “What? Are you going to shoot me now?” He said she continued to approach him, arguing and pointing the gun at his chest.

The man said he grabbed the woman’s right wrist to control the direction of the weapon. It went off, and he fell to his knees, “in total shock,” according to the report.

He said the woman then got into her car and shouted, “Call! Call! Call them!”

A neighbor gave him a ride to the Regional Medical Center, where he spoke with police. The man couldn’t give a written statement because he is left-handed.

The officer who spoke with the man said the woman upset him by calling at least twice while he was at the hospital. The officer spoke to the woman once, because she didn’t believe she had actually shot the man, the report said.

The officer asked the woman to come in and speak with police.
