An Orangeburg woman turned herself in Tuesday evening to face allegations that she shot an acquaintance, police say.
Police obtained a warrant for assault and battery with intent to kill against 27-year-old April L. Patterson of 416 Congress Lane, Orangeburg.
Police allege she shot a 26-year-old Orangeburg man in the hand. Orangeburg Department of Public Safety Capt. Mike Adams said the man was treated at the Regional Medical Center and released.
The man told officers a female acquaintance shot him as he was trying to keep her from pointing the gun at more vital parts Saturday. He said a series of altercations began at his Orangeburg job around 5:25 p.m. Saturday, according to an ODPS incident report.
The man said the woman pulled a black gun from a red bag in the back of her vehicle’s trunk and waved it around in the parking lot. After she struck the driver’s side window of his car with the gun, the man said, he left the parking lot and drove home.
The man told investigators he ran inside his home to grab some underwear so he could spend the night at a friend’s house and was walking out the door when he saw the woman drive up.
The woman then went into the trunk of her car again and pulled a gun out of the red bag, the report said.
The man told police the woman walked up to him “with an air of authority,” so he asked “What? Are you going to shoot me now?” He said she continued to approach him, arguing and pointing the weapon at his chest.
At that point, the man grabbed the woman’s right wrist to control the direction of the weapon. The gun went off, striking the victim who fell to his knees “in total shock,” according to the report.
A neighbor gave the wounded man a ride to the hospital. The woman called the victim at the hospital several times before an officer asked her to come in to talk to police, the report said.
