Village Square Theatre ventures 'Into the Woods' with season opener
Thursday, September 25, 2008LEXINGTON -- Village Square Theatre will open its 2008-09 season with Stephen Sondheim's musical "Into the Woods" on Sept. 26.
An ambivalent Cinderella? A blood-thirsty Little Red Riding Hood? A Prince Charming with a roving eye? A Witch ... who raps? They're all among the cockeyed characters that bring this production to life.
What begins as an irreverent fantasy in the style of "The Princess Bride" becomes a lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children. One of Sondheim's most popular works, this timeless, relevant piece is a rare modern classic.
Sarah Elizabeth Allen directs this production, with Camille Jones serving as musical director. Together, they lead the cast of 22 through James Lapine and Sondheim's fractured fairy tale. Beware, Act II tells a dark and mysterious tale of what could be if you take the wrong path. That path contains mature themes that may not be appropriate for younger audience members.
Performances run Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, Sept. 26-Oct. 12. Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 p.m., and Sunday's are at 3 p.m.
Tickets are $18 for adults, $16 for seniors 60 years of age and older, students and military and $14 for youth 12 years of age and younger. Box office hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and two hours prior to each performance. Tickets must be charged to a major credit card at the time of the reservation.
