Three arrested in beating of woman, 82

Orangeburg County Sheriff Larry Williams announced late Thursday three individuals had been arrested nearly a month after the home invasion of a prominent Norway businessman and assault his wife.

“We’ve charged three individuals in the assault of this Norway lady, Mrs. Fogle,” Williams said. “It’s still early in our investigation, but our theory is that this is a retaliation of some type.”

Williams has not released the names of the subjects. He plans to release further details of the arrests during a press conference on Friday.

However, the sheriff said the three have been charged with assault and battery with intent to kill and kidnapping in connection with the Aug. 29 vicious assault of Margaret Fogle, the 82-year-old wife of Norway businessman John A. Fogle.

“This is a serious business,” John Fogle said. “When something like this happens, you think you’re safe when you’re home, and you’re not. You have to walk around with a pistol in your hand and watching.”

Fogle told investigators that he had fallen asleep in the living room that night and was later awakened by the screams of his wife around midnight.

At least two men wearing masks ran from the bedroom and out of the residence, according to an Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

The attack left Margaret Fogle covered in blood from the blows to the head and face she received when she was struck multiple times with a shotgun. Fogle’s arm was broken, and her injuries required at least 10 stitches.

“My arm’s still not well from where they crushed my wrist,” Margaret Fogle said. “I’m doing better, but I’m still nervous about it because I look around and you never know who’s there.”

John Fogle, owner of Carolina Fresh Farms in nearby Neeses, said he will be at any hearing the trio is expected to have on Friday.

“These things just have to be changed,” he said. “Something’s got to change.”

Meantime, Williams said a fourth subject is being sought and an arrest on that individual is expected soon.

“We are confident that these are the four individuals who entered this home,” he said.

" My thoughts and prayers go out to Mrs.Fogle and her family but when you say retaliation of some type what do you mean? if i can recall correctly the i remember the fogle family being the paper for the incident with his grandson. so its not fair that you put in the paper that this may be some kind of retaliation of some type. The people who were involved in that incident may feel you are refering to them and it not right to anyone. for that to be printed in the paper. Its seem to me that Mr.Fogle is keeping something going and it needs to stop.ASAP "
