S.C. State trustees question scheduling football game with Clemson

By LEE TANT, T&D Staff Writer  Friday, September 26, 2008

“Could somebody explain to me why we are playing a school like Clemson?”

That was the question South Carolina State University Board Vice Chairman Dr. John Corbitt posed to fellow trustees at Thursday’s board meeting, days after the Bulldogs were demolished by the nationally ranked Clemson Tigers 54-0 in football last Saturday.

His remarks sparked a long, spirited debate between S.C. State trustees and President Dr. George Cooper over the merits of the university playing Football Bowl Subdivision opponents.

Cooper defended playing top teams, saying it helps recruiting and provides publicity for the university.

“Our players had a good showing,” Cooper said. “I hope we’re not just looking at the score.”

He also noted the S.C. State Marching 101 band received praise from the Clemson faithful for its halftime performance.

Corbitt called the final score as embarrassing.

“We are playing a school we know we can’t whip,” he said.

S.C. State was paid $235,000 to travel to Death Valley for the game. In addition, the university received all proceeds from tickets allotted to it.

Trustee Dr. Shirley Martin said she understood the financial reasons for playing Clemson. However, she said there are better ways to raise money.

Calling the game a “thrashing” several times, Martin said even a MEAC Championship season for the Bulldogs could be diminished by the loss to Clemson.

Trustee Dr. Walt Tobin said S.C. State traveled to Clemson for the same reason that other smaller schools travel to larger ones. He listed other similar match ups this season, such as Appalachian St. versus LSU, to illustrate his point.

“We need money. We need exposure,” he said.

Cooper said the university is going to continue playing high-quality opponents. He then predicted that S.C. State will defeat USC or Clemson one day and turn the South Carolina football world on its head. S.C. State is scheduled to play USC in 2011 and Clemson in 2016.

Outgoing Board Chairman Maurice Washington said the university sold 1,900 of the 3,000 tickets Clemson allotted for Bulldog fans. He pointed out that the university received those tickets in the spring.

Corbitt said he did not understand that because alumni were begging for tickets.

Staff Senate President Derrick Green suggested that other vendors, including Clemson season ticket holders, sold their tickets to Bulldog fans.

“It’s bad when you’ve got 3,000 tickets and can’t sell them. ... We’ve got to do more advertising,” trustee Jonathan Pinson said.

Pinson said many Bulldogs fans have a “tailgate mentality” because they stay outside the stadium during the games. He said fan excitement for S.C. State football has got to reach a level comparable to USC and Clemson.

" There are several questions Clemson answered about SCSU:
1. Do we have a top notch coaching Staff?
2. Does SCSU treasure playing athletic events in the big picture.
3. Do we want our players to be drafted by the NFL?
4. How can SCSU Recruit against the big power D1 and D1-aa if the potential to play a Power school is not endorsed by the school?
5. To be the best you got to play the best. Just how good are is the Football Coaching Staf? REALLY?
6. The head coach need help in Recruiting coaches for his team because the results creates so much after burn. "

" Shame on you: Put your energy to good use. Help SCSU with your concentration on the positive aspects of the school (SCSU). It is a wonderful asset to Orangeburg. We should all appreciate it and look for the good and comment on it (praise it) and not be so quick to squall when something isn't as pretty as you would make it if you were all powerful. So much energy into something as meaningless as this is hard to stomach. Folks aren't as thankful for the potential of SCSU as we should be. Someday, they will field a team to be reckoned with on all levels. SCSU should strive on growing the good and eliminating the bad, (press, board ?, and otherwise) and not give the press so much to dramatize for no reason other than to sell their product. It is a soap opera atomsphere that commenting on allows others to oppose and try to make you and SCSU bad. SCSU and the surronding community should look for opportunities to point out and concentrate on the good and deal with the percieved bad quietly. To see all the negativity hurts me and should each of you. We are better than we give ourselves credit for. Each shoud ask with any reply or post: Is good going to come of it?. If the answer is no or I am not sure then bad may come of it and avoidance is suggested. Look at me, I'm pointing out the negative. Shame on me. Have a great day. I love you all. "

" I'm reminded of the late Clemson Coach Frank Howard's story of playing national power Georgia Tech back in the late 1930's and 40's.
Clemson would travel to Atlanta and carry a big whupping home. I can't remember the exact quote, but Coach Howard said something like "I can take a big butt-whipping for $50,000." We all know what financial resources mean to an athletic department, the funds will make the Bulldog programs, and not just football, better in the long run. I've enjoyed these comments, and the recent story in the T and D about the great Coach Jeffries memories of and relationship with Coach Howard. Go Tigers! Go Bulldogs! "

" ICU81...I hear you and if I was not born and raised in Orangeburg then you may have a valid point about we Claflin Alums. But I can speak for me and I have seen SCSU in the same position now since the 70's. The best thing to happen to SCSU was Dr.Nance, Willie Jefferies, Cy Alexander, Buddy Pough and I forget what the lady president's name was (no disrespect). I have attitude because I have been a loyal bulldog fan since 1972 and I think I have a right to expect a lot more than what has been shown. Coach Pough is our local guy and he knows how we feel out here. He coached some of us right there at O-W and he does not deserve to be criticized by a very suspect board which has not produced one good plan for the future of SCSU. I have many constituents around the country that have attend HBCU's everywhere and the only thing they don't laugh at about SCSU is the football team. Stop trying to protect this board and get a better one. Everybody remembers how Claflin use to be and that is how we like it...how we use to be. It's called progress and Claflin has proposed to share in the development of SCSU. Great 1890 extension though!Doggone right we are bitter out here because that school carries our name and we are the laughing stock of the HBCU circuit! "

" Obviously I offended bigrasii because he/she has resorted to the infantile behavior of name calling. I apologize for hurting your feelings or speaking the truth. You must work at Claflin or know somebody who works there to know that they supposedly have all this money that they could buy SCSU. I know people who work at Claflin and they all complain on how it takes a minimum of a month for the university to reimburse them for expenses. Also there are businesses in Orangeburg who will only do work for Claflin University if they are paid in advance because Claflin has a history of not paying their bills on time. I guess that is how they operate in the black; they don’t pay their bills. As far as the night classes (the program is called Professional & Continuing Studies) it’s a joke. I didn’t want put Claflin’s dirty laundry out in the street but you forced my hand; there is more if you continue to post this ridiculous pipe dreams you have about Claflin. "

" Look, both schools got what they wanted: Clemson wanted a glorified scrimmage with another college team before ACC conference play, SC State got over $200,000 for their troubles since the school needed the money. Insulting Claflin can't and won't hide the fact that SC State has no business being on the field with either University on South Carolina Gamecocks or Clemson Tigers. To be truthful, the Gamecocks and Tigers have more at stake because of the way bowl system work by having at least 6 wins against Division 1-A schools to be eligible for a bowl, so playing schools like SC State from 1-AA level offers very little benefits. If you check out the schools throughout the country playing in major conferences, they schedule games like this at the beginning of the season for real/ game situation for the rest of the season in conference play. SC State did the same thing when they played Benedict, since Benedict is a level below SC State in football. People think that every 1-AA school have a chance to win since Appalachian State beat Michigan at home last year, but Appalachian State that is just expectation because Appalachian State was 2-time defending 1-AA champions. People need to see for what it is; Clemson needed an easy game and SC State was willing to provide it for a price. "

The most beautiful campuses are Claflin and OCTech. The most compotent leaders are at Claflin and OCTech. Granted Dr. Cooper is an outstanding individual but a new Jaguar is no good without gas in it to go! Claflin's preference to give a quality education (note..U.S. News and World Report.), Over a tennis program at the time....I think that will go down as a wise decision. My point of Claflin stepping in and purchasing the football team, I didn't just mean the football team I mean by the University back as a whole. Coach Pough may not be the best X's and O's coach right now in SC, but he is a tie with Wofford's coach as the best in SC bar none and he deserves a board that is not as country and stupid that will see how much better he has made the University not just the football team. Trust me sir the Alumini of Claflin University and the University itself can Purchase Oliver Dawson Stadium and every building on the campus. Check our books I think you will find ample funds. We do offer night classes for adults so if you need a refresher we are open to the public and ready to assist! "

" It's what is going on in the board meetings is an issue, SCSU has bigger issue than losing a football game, they have lost games in the last seconds of games, but that was never a question or an issue. Was that question asked before the Bulldogs played and lost or was the check not big enough for everyone pockets? SCSU needed to go out of the box to see some other parts of the world, to see, what a real locker room look like, to see what dedicated fans look like in a full stadium. Until the way of thinking is changed on that campus, the school will never grow or go to the next level to be the best. I think Dr. Cooper has all those things in mind for the school, but the question is, will the school let him do his job? That is yet to be seen. "

" In response to bigrasii ridiculous idea of selling SCSU football team to Claflin. First of all where are they going to play their games; the parkinglot of Claflin's gym. Claflin couldn't even support their tennis programs; when they did have the tennis programs they didn't even provide to their players rackets, uniforms or sneakers. All the tennis players recieved was $500 in book coupons. Also it is said that President Tisdale does not want a football team as long as he is a president at Claflin not to mention that Claflin just became part of the NCAA 2 months ago. Not to mention how is Claflin going to build a weight room for the team. Their current weight room is a converted classroom. We won't even discuss OCTech which is just an advanced High School. Please bigrasii keep your ignorance your secret. "

" EVERYONE IN A CAR OR RV HAS TO HAVE A TICKET TO THE GAME TO COME ON SCHOOL AND STADIUM GROUNDS DURING A GAME. CAMPUS POLICE WILL COME BY AT BEFORE KICKOFF AND AT THE HALF. There I just solved your ticket problem. Now if someone wants to stay out and eat and have paid for a ticket than more power to them. But this would cut down on loitering on campus during games. Games on ESPNU(which is HD) just looks better for recruiting if we pack the stadium during the Howard game. I like the fact that we play Georgia Tech in the ATL next year. Our Alumni is strong there, and it's a good trip. We haven't played there since the Heritage Bowl and SCSU not only sell all tickets, but there may be a bum rush for tickets. The problem I do have is FAMU is playing on Versus Network Sat. and we are picked to win the MEAC. It's because we have no big Classic game. We need to play Hampton at Panthers stadium and you will see better attendance than for NC A&T. We are not on SportSouth or CSTV. Battle at the Bank(B of A stadium) SCSU vs Hamp(or NC State) would be big. CORBITT lack of intelligence on your part. We have 3 players in the NFL Hall of Fame and Clemson and USC has none. We beat Clemson is Hoops. The same year we beat Miami and Penn State in Hoops. These are games coach Carter wouldn't dare schedule, but we won. If we follow Corbitt's incompetence, if we win the MEAC in hoops, we should stay home and don't play Duke. Sometimes it's best to just keep your piehole shut. "

" AMEN TO REDDAWG,SCSU101,BIGRASII,AND MAMYERS20. I concurr with your statements.Trustees Corbitt, Martin, and Pinson are three of the reason SCSU is handicap with poor leadership. Apparently they know nothing about football or finance. Where do we get these people from who can not think outside the box? Any Trustee that do not understand why we play schools like Clemson and USC should resign from the board. I can understand why the average fan may ask such a question; but not a Trustee. They of all people should know the role football finances play in paying the bills for the other sports. I was at the game and would have appreciated a better game from the dogs because I know they are a better team than what was displayed last Sat. I did not expect to beat a team that had a pre-season ranking of #9 in the nation. We do not have the money, the scholarship, the players, the coaches, or the fan support to beat a school like Clemson. The exposure for the players, the band and the school was great! We could not afford to pay for the press and advertising the school received. Will someone please ash Mrs. Martin, to share her wisdom with the AD and President on better ways to make money. She and others have been on the board long enough to have implemented a way to raise funds. I really don't believe any of the board members really have a cue. In 1999 FAMU beat us 76-16 and in 2000 FAMU beat us 64-9. Now losing to another HBCU in your conference with similar resources is what I call embarrassing. We should never feel embarrass by losing to a D-1 team. They are suppose to win because they can attract the best athlete. We do not even compete that well with Wofford, Furman, and Coastal Carolina. If the AD would focus more on marketing and selling tickets, and stop gouging the fans and the tailgaters with crazy tickets, parking and tailgating fees, perhaps we could develop a loyal following like The Clemson(s), USC(s), etc. I have learned several things by playing USC and Clemson. Their fans are more loyal, motivated and passionate about their team. The school leadership understands marketing and customer satisfaction. Too bad our leadership did not learn anything to emulate at SCSU. We have a long way to go and part of the problem is the school& board leadership. Our football coaches and players are doing a great job and there is no doubt in my mind that we are the best HBCU football team in the nation and we will win the MEAC! Too bad our school leadership is not of the same level. Dr. Cooper please help get the school on the right track. Get yourself some visionary thinkers to support you and move SCSU to another level. "

" South Carolina State University must move forward and must compete with any University that fields a football team. The leadership of South Carolina State has been questionable for some time. The idea that a trustee of the university would rather play a lesser university shows that complacency and mediocrity is behind the driving force of the university. This attitude is reflected in the infrastructure of the university and the state of the degreed programs offered and the success of the students that enter the university. This same leadership has made a practice of looking within to promote and hire. There are times when it is prudent to look outside the culture and tradition of the school to move forward. What the university needs is a change, we seem to have a new president that understands what it takes to move the university forward. We need to replace the trustees that we have now and the football coaching staff. There have been successes on the field but that success has been limited and it is time to look for someone who can recruit and build on the existing program to move the program forward. What we do not need is leadership at the top who do not understand that an academic challenge and a collegiate athletic challenge is something to cower from and a coaching staff who cannot raise the program to a level where we at least when the conference championship. I don't know who authorized this new restriction but I purchase two spots each year for the past seven years to enjoy the games and This year they were purchased before these new rules. I am to protest. I guess next year I'll just keep myself and my family at the house and listen to the game on the radio for Free !!! They think that the stands are empty now ,just wait until reality hits.... There must not be anyone with a business sense in that office. If they wany to increase sales then they should be asking business leaders whom profit from the shear number of people that come to these games to do their share by purchasing season tickets and somehow giving them to employees and fans.
