OCSO display designed to S.T.O.P. teens from getting into trouble
By T&D Staff Wednesday, October 01, 2008It’s called S.T.O.P., a mobile display of what can happen to teens who become involved in dangerous or illegal activity.
Sponsored by the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office, the mobile unit made its debut at the Orangeburg County Fair on Tuesday with realistic photographs of violent activity surrounding drugs, gangs, alcohol and weapons.
“We equipped this unit so that we can take it to communities throughout the county,” Sheriff Larry Williams said. “We want to be able to go wherever there might be a problem and show young people where they can end up if they’re involved in these activities.”
Officials say students and teachers are encouraged to view the display and take back lessons learned to their respective schools.
“We intend to make good use of this unit,” Williams said. “I think our information we’re dispensing and the displays will deter many of our young people from getting involved in violent activities.”
After this week’s initial presentation at the fair, the 15-foot mobile unit will be made available to area schools, churches and community organizations upon request.
To schedule the S.T.O.P. unit, teachers and youth directors can contact the OCSO at 803-513-4647.
