Special to The T&D

The Orangeburg Civic Ballet is sponsoring a contest to select the art that will be used for this year's "Nutcracker" poster. Artists of all ages are invited to submit a work representative of the famous ballet.

Anyone can enter the contest, and prizes will be awarded to the top three winners as determined by a panel of judges. The winning art will be used on all posters promoting this year's OCB performance of "The Nutcracker" ballet, which will be held Dec. 13-14 at Martin Luther King Jr. Auditorium on the campus of South Carolina State University.

Judging the contest will be Dr. Leo Twiggs, distinguished artist-in-residence at Claflin University; Frank Martin, director of visual and performing arts at S.C. State; and Beth Thomas, director of the Orangeburg County Fine Arts Center.

Submissions should be on 11x14-inch artist's paper. Any easily reproducible media is acceptable, such as charcoal, watercolor, acrylics or crayon. Entries must be submitted no later than Oct. 31 to Tamalyn's Dance Centre, situated on Springdale Street across from the Hillcrest Sports Complex, or to the Orangeburg County Fine Arts Center in the Edisto Memorial Gardens.

All submissions will be on display at MLK Auditorium during the ballet's public performances. Upon submission, all artwork becomes property of the Orangeburg Civic Ballet and is non-returnable.

For more information, call Tamalyn's Dance Centre, home of the Orangeburg Civic Ballet, at 803-533-0017.
