A Dorchester woman was killed Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 26 after her she lost control of her truck and struck a tree, according to Lance Cpl. Trevor Clinton of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The road problems continued as an accident involving an ambulance sent eight people to the hospital in Bamberg County.

Jennifer Smith, 42, of 872 St. Paul Road, Dorchester, died after she lost control of her 2004 Toyota Tundra on I-26 at approximately 1:43 p.m. near mile marker 162 outside of Bowman, Clinton said.

Two children in the vehicle were transported to the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg with injuries that do not threaten their lives.

“The accident is still currently under investigation,” Clinton said.

The second accident occurred around 3 p.m. on U.S. Highway 78, three miles east of Denmark, according to SCHP Lance Cpl. Scot Edgeworth.

Bamberg resident Sally Mae Cann lost control of her 1993 Ford Explorer and went into the opposite lane, Edgeworth said.

Her vehicle hit an ambulance with four passengers, driven by Moses F. Cutter III of Cordova. Cann was transporting three passengers.

All of the people involved in the accident were transported to either RMC or the Bamberg County Hospital and Nursing Center.

Edgeworth could not provide any information on the conditions of the victims, including whether any of the passengers in the ambulance were already being transported to a hospital prior to the accident.

Cann was issued a citation for allegedly driving too fast for conditions, Edgeworth said.
