Reassessment is government greed

Orangeburg County residents are now receiving property reassessment notices after the completion of a two-year process that included the appraisal of more than 64,000 pieces of property.

This is not fair to the property owners as this reassessment was done in the last two years when land and home prices were going up because of the lying and cheating of the mortgage companies and banks inflating the prices and putting us into a depression with hard times now.

Real estate prices have been falling for over a year and the government agencies want to stick it to the people so they don’t have to tighten their belts like the rest of us. I plead to all the homeowners and business owners to file protests to Orangeburg County Auditor Roger Cleckley in writing. I also would flood his office with calls to 803-533-6233.

I would also call your County Council representative and complain to postpone it until next year. They can do this by law. The tax law is a double-edged sword as it states “if values change.” It doesn’t say up or down. If you don’t say anything, I promise you the county will take every dime it can con you out of. This is not the time to increase everyone’s taxes.
