S.C. American Legion commander stops in North on 21-day walking tour
By BARBARA JEFFCOAT, T&D Correspondent Monday, October 20, 2008NORTH – Commander James H. Holland, Department of the South Carolina American Legion, met with members of North Post 78 American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary at North Town Hall recently on his 21-day walking tour of the state.
Holland, a resident of Aiken, began his “Walk for Veterans” on Sept. 11 at the North Carolina-South Carolina border and concluded his tour in Charleston on Oct. 4. His itinerary, roughly along Highway 178, included visits to 21 South Carolina towns and cities that have American Legion Posts.
“My purpose of this walk is threefold,” Holland said. “I want to raise the awareness of veterans in their communities, to tell the American Legion story and raise funds for the American Legacy Scholarship.”
The legacy scholarship provides college funds to children of veterans who died on active duty. Contributions to this fund may be made to American Legacy Scholarship: P.O. Box 3309, Irmo, SC.
On his walk, Holland wore an American Legion cap and carried a walking stick with an American flag. Holland is a veteran of the Vietnam War.
