RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — IBM and Lenovo are cutting jobs in Research Triangle Park in the face of the struggling economy.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that spokesman John Buscemi said IBM eliminated about 100 contract workers at its Research Triangle Park operations Friday. IBM has about 11,000 employees in the Triangle, not including contract workers. The company won’t say how many contract workers it has.

Lenovo is laying off about 50 employees between now and the end of the year in Morrisville, which serves as a global headquarters. Lenovo has about 1,680 workers in Morrisville.

Lenovo spokesman Ray Gorman said the job cuts won’t affect Lenovo’s plans to expand operations at its Morrisville campus, where it currently occupies two buildings and is nearing completion of a third building.
