By SONJA GLEATON, T&D Correspondent Thursday, October 30, 2008Award-winning singer and songwriter Ronny Hinson will present a gospel concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, at Joe Headden Baseball Field in Neeses.
Best known as the writer of the gospel music standard "The Lighthouse," Hinson also wrote some of gospel music's most famous songs including "He Pilots My Ship," "When He Was On The Cross," "The Two Winning Hands," "Mercy Built Bridge," "Once Upon A Hill," "Higher Than I've Ever Been," "Oasis," "The Old Ship Of Zion" and "I Feel A Little Song Coming On."
Hinson was named Gospel Music Association's Songwriter of the Year in 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1991. He was the first to bring gospel music to New York's Carnegie Hall and has sung before many political figures including President Ronald Reagan.
Hinson performed with his family's singing group, The Original Hinsons, and after the group retired in 1988, he launched his solo career with a No. 1 hit. Recently, The Original Hinsons were inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
Hinson's concert is the second in a series of community events for Neeses. The first concert featuring Quinton Mills attracted more than 1,000 people.
"People are very excited about having the opportunity to see and hear Ronny Hinson in person," said Carolyn Fogle, concert coordinator. "The public is encouraged to attend this open-air event, which will feature gospel singing and personal testimonies from people who have overcome adversity."
Joe Headden Baseball Field is located on Goldcoast Street behind the Neeses Farm Museum and Giant Flea Market near the intersection of U.S. 321 and S.C. 4. Admission is free, and food and beverages will be available for purchase prior to the concert. Visitors are asked to bring folding chairs.
