Authorities are looking for a man who shot at a passing car and fled into a residential neighborhood Monday afternoon.

Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office spokesman Tom Brown said no one was injured as a passenger car was shot while it was traveling on Jamison Avenue around 4 p.m.

Witnesses told investigators that a man fired several rounds at the vehicle before fleeing behind a nearby home.

Police surrounded the home after witnesses said the gunman fled into the residence.

The homeowner arrived and let police in. No one was found inside, leaving investigators to believe that initial reports of the gunman barricading himself inside the home were incorrect.

Investigators questioned the occupants of the vehicle, but have yet to figure out why someone would open fire on the car.

"So far, the owner of the car can't think of anybody who would want to shoot at him," Brown said.

As darkness fell around 6 p.m., county deputies were patrolling the Jamison Avenue area in search of the gunman.

If anyone saw or knows anything about Monday's shooting incident, they are asked to contact the Orangeburg County Sheriff's office at 803-534-3550 or Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIMESC.
