CC’s Sims earns national honors
By T&D Staff Tuesday, November 11, 2008Calhoun County quarterback David Sims has garnered several awards for his performance in Friday’s 63-14 first-round playoff victory over Blacksburg.
Sims rushed for 253 yards and three touchdowns, threw for 202 yards and three touchdowns and returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown in the contest. For his efforts, he was selected as the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Player of the Week, and according to Saints’ head coach Walt Wilson Sims was also selected as ESPN’s National High School Player of the Week on Monday. According to Wilson, highlights from Sims’ performance from Friday will be aired on ESPN News around 4 p.m. Thursday. Sims was also selected as The Times and Democrat’s Co-Player of the Week and will be honored at Thursday’s meeting of the Orangeburg Touchdown Club. He shares The T&D’s Player of the Week honor with teammate Alshon Jeffery who hauled in eight receptions for 193 yards and four touchdowns. Charleston Southern head coach Jay Mills is the guest speaker at the event which will begin at 11:30 a.m. at The Cinema in the Old Orangeburg Mall.
“The Army is proud to recognize David Sims who, like the American Soldier, finds the inner strength to never give up until the mission is completed,” said Colonel David Lee, Deputy Chief of Staff, G-7, Strategic Communications, Marketing and Outreach, U.S. Army Accessions Command in a release announcing the Saints’ star’s national honor. “The strength to succeed, to be a leader, is a highly-valued characteristic of every Army Strong Soldier. Sims’ efforts clearly echo that strength.”
