Sylvan named MEAC Women’s Volleyball Coach of the Year
Three Lady Bulldogs Earn Second Team Honors

Virginia Beach, Va — South Carolina State women’s volleyball coach, Millicent Sylvan, has been named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) 2008 Women’s Volleyball Coach of the Year. Jarne Gleaton, Lauren Harris and Bria Brimmer were each named to the All-Conference second team.

Sylvan, who earned MEAC Coach of the Year honors for the second time in her career, is in her second year at the helm of the Lady Bulldogs. She guided her team to a 5-3 mark in MEAC play and 13-21 overall record after posting a 1-7 conference mark and 8-23 overall record a year ago. The Lady Bulldogs are ranked third in the league and 50th in the nation with 1.58 aces per set. South Carolina State is among the top five teams in the league in blocks per set (1.38) and ranks among the top seven teams in the league in five additional statistical categories. Sylvan previously won MEAC Coach of the Year honors in 2005 as the head coach at North Carolina A&T.

Gleaton, a 5-11, sophomore, outside-hitter currently leads the Lady Bulldogs in kills with 303 (2.50 per game). She has also recorded 175 digs with 33 total blocks.

Harris, a 5-7, freshman, libero from led S.C. State and was second in the conference in digs with 372 (3.15 per game).

Brimmer, a 5-6, freshman, setter was the floor general the Lady Bulldogs. She recorded 898 assists (7.42 per game), with 164 services aces and 21 total blocks.

The Lady Bulldogs will travel to the Hampton, Va. this weekend to participate in the 2008 MEAC Volleyball Championships. S.C. State will open the tournament against Delaware State at 12 noon on Friday.
