Ruby Grant's home at 1138 Mount Zion Road, Denmark, burned Saturday night. About 45 firefighters responded to the blaze after it was reported by a passerby. Fire departments from Bamberg, Govan, Olar, Clear Pond and Blackville helped the Denmark Volunteer Fire Department on the scene and by bringing water for the fire trucks.

Denmark Fire Chief Johnny Sandifer thanked all the firefighters who responded, saying "I really appreciate the help from members of our neighboring fire departments. ... Our DVFD members worked hard, but really needed assistance maintaining a water supply and manning the fire scene." The cause of the fire has not been determined.
