Town's new Crime Watch group moving forward
By RANDY THOMAS, T&D Correspondent Tuesday, November 25, 2008BOWMAN - The Town of Bowman's new Crime Watch program is keeping busy, organizers say.
The group met with Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office personnel for suggestions and comments on how to improve the program, it was reported during November's Bowman Town Council meeting. Plans are also being made for the placement of newly purchased Crime Watch signs around the town.
Organizers said the recent Crime Watch Walk fund-raiser was a success, raising 85 percent of its goal.
"We are not accepting any negativity," the group's Julia Walker said.
"I think the Crime Watch program is making some real progress," Mayor Zelda Pelzer added.

Also during the meeting, Police Chief Allen Kinsey welcomed Officer Eric Bonnette to the department.
"He brings a lot of experience in drugs and criminal investigation," Kinsey said.
Kinsey said there were fewer calls for service during October, noting the cases investigated by the department included three shoplifting cases, one harassing call, two burglaries, one vehicle theft, a case involving possession of crack cocaine, two criminal domestic violence cases and an armed robbery.
In other business:
* The town's financial report for October showed a general fund balance of $89,558.75, a municipal fund balance of $12,440.14 and a sewer operations balance of $28,265.66.
* It was reported that the sewer lines on Sycamore and Tupelo streets were completed.
* Pelzer urged residents to insulate their pipes for the winter.
