CofC's White Jr.'s free throws sink USC
Saturday, November 29, 2008CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Tony White Jr. made two free throws with 3.4 seconds to play in overtime to lift the College of Charleston to an 82-80 victory over South Carolina on Friday night.
The win was Charleston’s second over the Gamecocks in 29 tries and the first since 1930.
“It was a great basketball game,” said Charleston coach Bobby Cremins. “I thought everybody looked exhausted in the overtime. But Tony made a great drive and got bumped, went to the free throw line and knocked them down.
“Obviously for us, it was a great win.”
White led Charleston (5-1) with 21 points while Andrew Goudelock added 20.
Devan Downey led the Gamecocks (4-1) with 22 points.
With the score tied at 80, Downey missed a driving layup and Charleston rebounded with 23 seconds to play.
Charleston worked for the last shot, with White driving to the basket and drawing a foul from Zam Fredrick with 3.4 seconds left.
“Our defensive product was not there tonight,” said South Carolina coach Darrin Horn.
Dominique Archie made a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give South Carolina a 76-74 lead with 11.7 seconds to play in regulation.
Goudelock countered with a jumper just inside the 3-point line with 2.7 seconds left to tie it for the Cougars.
Goudelock then intercepted South Carolina’s inbounds pass, but his shot from beyond halfcourt at the buzzer was short of the mark and the game went to overtime.
South Carolina led 25-12 with 10:40 to play in the first half, and led by an 11-point margin with 6:49 remaining.
Then the Cougars started making shots from the perimeter and cut the lead to 42-41 at the half.
The Gamecocks got off to a fast start with their 3-point shooting making their first four shots but made just 1 of 3 during the last 12:22 of the second half.
