An altercation between an Orangeburg man and his son-in-law turned bloody Monday night.

According to an Orangeburg Department of Public Safety incident report, Hubert Ray Parker lost his temper and allegedly stabbed his son-in-law, Robert Chavis, twice.

Chavis' injuries are not life-threatening. He was released from the hospital, ODPS Capt. Mike Adams said.

The 56-year-old Parker, who lives at 571 Salley St., was charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature in connection with the incident.

According to the report, Parker suddenly got angry and asked his wife, Delores, and Chavis to leave his home Monday night. They went outside, and Chavis then knocked on the door of the residence twice to see if Parker would let Mrs. Parker back inside, the report said. Parker opened the door after the first knock, brandishing two knives before closing the door, Chavis told police.

Chavis said the second time he knocked on the door, Parker violently charged off the porch toward him with the knives. Chavis said he used a steel chair he found in the front yard to keep Chavis at bay.

Parker still managed to cut Chavis on the right hand and on his head, the report said. Chavis then struck Parker with the steel chair and sought help from an ODPS officer who lives in the area, according to the incident report.

Chavis was transported to the Regional Medical Center. Authorities found a bloody knife in Parker's home during their initial investigation, the report said.

The report also stated that Parker was intoxicated and could not provide a plausible story as to why he attacked Chavis.

Parker was released on a $2,500 surety bond.
