Reassessment is lacking fairness

The recent letter of Mr. Whetsell and Mr. Baxley on the nonsense of property reassessments are warning bells for Orangeburg County Council. Abe Salama has appeared before council sounding a similar alarm and questioning council's judgement in raising the market value of properties in a depressed economy. Once again, Clyde Livingston is the lone councilman to hear the cry of taxpayer pain. I appreciate the foursome's leadership on the issue.

"Fairness" is a desirable trait in our Community of Character. All citizens of Orangeburg County who feel that the appraisal of their property lacks fairness should complete the appeal form and mail it to the assessor's office. The specific grounds for an appeal are obvious. Real estate values are down. Home prices are down 17 percent. Unemployment is up, not our property values.

Please join Whetsell, Baxley and Salama and speak up against the untimely reassessments. Your appeal will be a plea for fairness from the deaf six pack of county council and it may lower your property taxes.
