BAMBERG - Bamberg City Council gave first-reading approval to an ordinance to borrow $161,000 from South Carolina Bank and Trust to purchase a new fire truck during its regular December meeting.

In conjunction with the ordinance, council members passed a resolution that enables them to enter into a lease-purchase agreement with SCB&T for the purchase.

Also during the meeting, Terry Still was appointed assistant fire chief of the Bamberg Fire Department to replace Buddy Sandifer, who is retiring.

In other business, Elizabeth Moody appeared before council in regards to next year's Veteran's Day Celebration. Moody asked if council could look into construction of a memorial brick wall to honor county veterans.

Resident Pat Jones also appeared before council with concerns about traffic control in her neighborhood near the former USA Manufacturing building.

"We're talking about life or death and destruction of property," Jones said, noting that motorists are driving too fast around the curve.

Jones also registered a complaint about the line-up for the Bamberg Christmas Parade held the previous Saturday, stating that "people were driving through my yard (until) they finally put up cones." She said she felt her neighborhood is disrespected each year in regards to the parade.
