By SHERRYL PETERS, T&D Correspondent Tuesday, December 23, 2008NORWAY - Betty Ball Smith, a retired teacher and Norway resident, was awarded the Order of the Silver Crescent on Dec. 14 by Gov. Mark Sanford.
The Order of the Silver Crescent is awarded by the Governor of South Carolina for exemplary performance, contribution and achievement within the community. It is the state's highest award for volunteer and community service.
Smith was recognized as an outstanding educator who continues to provide academic support to students despite the fact that she has retired.
She is known for her efforts to educate young children not enrolled in kindergarten and for providing funds for meals for students who could not afford to pay for the meals themselves. Additionally, she is well known in the Norway community for her work with the Helping Hands ministry and for book fairs at Hunter-Kinard-Tyler Elementary School.
"Mrs. Smith has made a positive difference in countless lives," Sanford said.
