Orangeburg man says telemarketer threatened him
By The Associated Press Tuesday, December 30, 2008An Orangeburg man notified deputies Saturday after receiving what seemed to be a call from a telemarketer that turned into threats of violence, according to an OCSO incident report.
The man said that around 9:45 p.m., he got a call from a man who said he was with a company called Adult Movies Unlimited. The caller said the Orangeburg man had a past due bill and was demanding payment.
The Orangeburg man told deputies neither he nor anyone is his home ordered anything from such a company.
When the caller was told not to call back, he became irate and began shouting, "Shut the h - - - up before I come through this phone and beat your a - -! I know where you live and don't be surprised to hear a pop, pop, pop," according to the incident report.
The Orangeburg man said he didn't feel particularly threatened by the man's statements, but knew it wasn't a legitimate company when the caller made the threats.
Deputies and the victim recognized the address of the alleged company as an address in Cope, the report said.

* A Santee man was taken to the hospital Saturday after a fight at a local nightclub, according to an OCSO incident report.
The man said that around 7 p.m., he drove into the parking lot of Club Lucy's in Santee and was approached by a man making verbal threats. The report said when the man got close enough, he began hitting the victim with his fist, and several other men jumped into the fray to help the attacker.
The fight was broken up by a man who pulled the parties apart. The victim, 19, was then taken to be treated for scratches and bruises, the report said.
* A Springfield woman's truck was reported stolen Christmas Day and later found several miles from her home.
The woman said that around 8:37 a.m., she left to run an errand. When she returned about an hour later, her 1984 GMC truck was missing.
At about 1:40 p.m., a relative called to say he found the truck in a church parking lot on Neeses Highway in Orangeburg. The vehicle was towed to the woman's home.
* An axe-wielding man was arrested and jailed on a charge of domestic violence on Christmas Eve, according to an OCSO incident report.
A woman called deputies, alleging her husband assaulted her. She said that around 1:56 a.m., he came out of his room and began yelling about the company having to leave. She said he then began punching her in the face. He allegedly pushed her head down while he was holding an axe, saying he was going to kill her, the report said.
A friend at the home grabbed the man's hand and held him at bay. The woman then called 911. From her wheelchair, the woman said she didn't think she needed medical treatment.
* The Boys and Girls Club was reportedly burglarized Christmas Eve.
A volunteer with the club said that around 8:49 p.m., he realized someone ransacked a room in the Presidential Drive facility. A wheelchair was taken from the club, he said.
* A man was taken into custody on drug-related charges Christmas Eve.
Patrolling Stilton Road around 10:40 p.m., deputies came upon a vehicle parked in the road. When deputies approached the vehicle, they noticed a pill bottle on the floor with rock-like items around it. Deputies asked a 20-year-old man to exit the vehicle while they searched it. A 9 mm handgun and a bag containing what looked like marijuana were found, according to an OCSO incident report.
* An Orangeburg Lane man was arrested early Monday on drug charges after police stopped a suspicious vehicle, according to an ODPS incident report.
At about 1 a.m., police came across a vehicle parked on the side of Xavier Street with its parking lights on. When the police passed, the lights went out. However, as the patrol unit was turning around, the lights on the car came on and the vehicle began to move, albeit on the wrong side of the road, the report said.
The officers asked the driver to step out of the car when they smelled marijuana coming from the inside, the report said. A bag containing a leafy substance was allegedly claimed by a passenger.
Tory Maurice Grant, 17, of 254 Harvey Lane, Orangeburg, was arrested on a charge of possession with intent to distribute marijuana and possession with intent to distribute marijuana within proximity of a school.
