CAMERON - A husband-and-wife duo have earned the Town of Cameron's Firefighter of the Year Awards for 2008.

Mayor Russ Middleton and Charles Polin, who had previously resigned as Cameron Fire Chief but recently accepted reappointment to that position, commended Firefighters Gloria and Herber Rast for the exceptional work they do for the fire department during Monday night's council meeting.

Also during the meeting, Middleton reported that although Almega Cable still had not removed all of its equipment from the poles in town, SCE&G is removing the equipment because it needs the space.

The mayor also noted that the request the town sent to CSX railroad to place permanent electric lines for lighting the crape myrtle trees along Boyce Lawton Drive is on hold awaiting the railroad company's response.

In addition, Middleton said a number of residents had trouble with their telephones for several days but the service has since improved. Police Chief Chris Hales said Windstream had found some problems with the lines and repaired them. If residents are still having problems, they should call Windstream, the mayor said.

In other business:

* Hales said the police department in December handled 34 traffic cases, responded to 30 in-town calls, assisted the Calhoun County Sheriff's Department three times and assisted EMS three times. Police made two arrests for driving under suspension and one arrest for criminal domestic violence. Officers also served three arrest warrants.

* Polin reported the fire department responded to three calls in December, for a total of 99 calls in 2008.

* The town's financial report ending Dec. 31 showed revenues of $5,494.78; expenses of $21,647.89; checking account balance of $7,921.64; fire department checking account balance of $12,539.79 and Money Market account balance of $180,052.46, for a total balance of $200,513.89.

* Council members extended their appreciation to all of the individuals who helped decorate the fire department for the tree lighting ceremony, particularly Wayne Polin.
