PALMETTO STATE BASKETBALL: College of Charleston downs Georgia Southern

CHARLESTON — Andrew Goudelock scored 18 points to lead six College of Charleston players in doubles figures in the Cougars’ 100-87 victory over Georgia Southern on Saturday.

The Cougars (11-3, 3-1 Southern Conference) matched their season-high for points, while scoring only two points in the final 4:11 with their starters on the bench. Charleston beat UNC Wilmington 100-80 on Dec. 19.

Charleston took a 52-41 advantage into halftime and led Georgia Southern (4-8, 2-2) by as many as 26 points in the second half.

Tony White Jr. and Donavan Monroe scored 16 points apiece for the Cougars. Antwaine Wiggins and Dustin Scott added 13 each, and Jermaine Johnson had 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Cougars were 11-for-22 from 3-point range.

Antonio Hanson led the Eagles with 25 points. Ben Drayton III had 13 and Julian Allen and Tyler Troupe had 12 apiece.

Florida Gulf Coast 80, S.C.-Upstate 56

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Kyle Marks and Reggie Chambers scored 16 points each as Florida Gulf Coast defeated South Carolina-Upstate 80-56 in Atlantic Sun Conference action on Saturday.

Florida Gulf Coast (7-10, 3-3) won its fifth straight home game and second straight Atlantic Sun game.

Delvin Franklin and Reed Baker both added 11 points for the Eagles while Ed Rolax added a career-high 10 points. Josh Chavis had 18 points and Bobby Davis added 10 for SC-Upstate (2-12, 1-4).

SC-Upstate jumped out to a 10-4 advantage but Florida Gulf Coast regained the lead 13-12 on a layup by Baker. That was part of a 14-2 run that gave the Eagles a 22-14 lead.

Florida Gulf Coast led 38-24 at halftime. Chambers, who had three 3-pointers, scored 11 points in the first half along with Marks.

SC-Upstate lost its ninth straight road game.

In the second half, Florida Gulf Coast kept building its margin to 62-41, 70-44 and 77-49.

Helped by 52.6 percent shooting (10-of-19) in the first half, the Eagles hit 46.3 for the game (25-of-54). Florida Gulf Coast also made 22-of-27 free throws and committed just 14 turnovers, five in the first half. They had a 21-14 edge in assists.

USC-Upstate shot just 36 percent (18-of-50) and 4-of-22 on 3-pointers. They made just 16-of-28 free throws and were outrebounded 40-33.

Wofford 60, Samford 51

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Noah Dahlman scored 23 points to lead Wofford to a 60-51 victory over Samford on Saturday in the first basketball game between the schools in 27 years.

Dahlman has scored in double figures in the last eleven games, tallying at least 20 points in three of the last four games for the Terriers (6-6, 2-1 Southern Conference).

Samford (6-7, 1-3) lost for the first time at home this season.

In the second half, the Terriers went five minutes without scoring a basket, but still led 55-44 with 3:49 left. The Bulldogs used a 7-0 run to cut the margin to four points with 55 seconds remaining. Wofford struggled from the free-throw line in the final minute — hitting only 9 of 21 in the second half — but held on for the win.

Jason Dawson had 11 points for Wofford and Tim Johnson added 10 rebounds.

Bryan Friday led Samford with 13 points.

Virginia Military 103, Coastal Carolina 102

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Chavis Holmes scored 35 points and Austin Kenon added 29 as Virginia Military Institute held off Coastal Carolina 103-102 on Saturday.

Keith Gabriel scored 19 points for the Keydets (13-2, 5-0 Big South Conference), the highest scoring team in the nation with 96.7 points a game.

Holmes, who went 8 of 8 from the free throw line, made two foul shot to give VMI a 99-91 lead with 3:20 left in the second half.

Coastal Carolina (7-9, 1-3) scored seven straight points after two layups by Joseph Harris and Dexter Moore’s 3-pointer to cut the advantage to 99-98 with 46 second left in the game. But Holmes’ jumper with 14 seconds left put VMI ahead by three points and hit two free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.

Harris led Coastal with 30 points and 16 rebounds. Mario Sisinni scored 20 points and nine assists, while Steven Sexton had 11.

 

Davidson 84, The Citadel 69

CHARLESTON — Stephen Curry scored 32 points and had five steals in Davidson’s 84-69 win over The Citadel on Saturday night.

The Wildcats (11-3, 4-0 Southern Conference) shot 47.2 percent from the field (25-for-53).

Davidson, which shot 50 percent from 3-point range in the first half (6 of 12) was 3-for-11 in the second. Will Archambault added 11 points and Andrew Lovedale added 10 for the Wildcats.

Cameron Well led The Citadel (7-8, 2-2) with 25 points. Demetrius Nelson had 18 points for the Bulldogs and Zach Urbanus added 10.

It was the 21st time Curry has topped the 30-point mark, trailing all-time leading scorer John Gergy in games with 30 or more by three games.

Davidson, which came off a 79-67 loss to No. 2 Duke Wednesday, has won nine of its last 11 games. Against the Blue Devils, Curry scored 29 points — the most Duke has allowed any player this season.



Winthrop beats Presbyterian 54-53 in OT

CLINTON — Andre Jones hit a 3-pointer with 16 seconds left in overtime to lead Winthrop to a 54-53 win over Presbyterian on Saturday night.

Jones led the Eagles (3-11, 2-3 Big South Conference) with 13 points. Reggie Middleton chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds.

Al’Lonzo Coleman finished with 20 points and nine rebounds to lead the Blue Hose (6-10, 3-2). Chase Holmes added 14 points and six rebounds.

With nine seconds left in regulation, Coleman made 1 of 2 free throws to tie the score at 47-47. Middleton missed a jumper with one second left to force overtime.

In overtime, Presbyterian only made one field goal, but took a 53-51 lead after Coleman made two free throws with 1:20 remaining. Neither team scored again until Jones’ 3-pointer. The Blue Hose failed to attempt another shot, as they turned the ball over twice in the final seconds.



Liberty 79, Charleston Southern 60

LYNCHBURG, Va. — Seth Curry scored 27 points and Liberty held off Charleston Southern 79-60 on Saturday night.

The Flames (11-6, 2-3 Big South Conference), who had lost five of their previous nine games by a combined 11 points, led 55-53 with 10:03 left. Liberty then held the Buccaneers (5-9, 1-3) to one basket in the next 9:43.

Charleston Southern lost its sixth straight game despite outrebounding Liberty 39-34. The Buccaneers turned the ball over 18 times compared to nine turnovers for Liberty.

The Flames took a 35-29 advantage into halftime, but the Buccaneers moved ahead briefly at 37-35 on two 3-pointers and a layup by Jamarco Warren.

Liberty took the lead for good on a Curry layup with 13:27 left.

Anthony Smith added 13 points for Liberty, while Brolin Floyd had 12 and Kyle Ohman added 10.

Warren led Charleston Southern with 24 points.
