Educator, entrepreneur to speak at Voorhees event

DENMARK -- Author, speaker, entrepreneur and award-winning mentor Dr. Calvin Mackie will be the keynote speaker for Voorhees' Black History Month Kickoff Celebration.

Today's event is open to the public and will take place Thursday, Feb. 5, at 11 a.m. in Massachusetts Hall Auditorium.

Mackie attended the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He also earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics at Morehouse College. Continuing his quest for education, he earned a master's degree and a doctorate in mechanical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Currently, he is the managing partner for Channel ZerO Group, LLC, which is an educational and motivational consulting company. He is a co-founder of the business.

Mackie was a faculty member at Tulane University in New Orleans from 1996-2007. He conducted research related to heat transfer, energy efficiency and renewable energy.

He was also a visiting professor in the department of chemical engineering at the University of Michigan during the 2004-2005 academic school year.

Mackie has won numerous awards, including the 2004 National Association for Developmental Educators Outstanding Alumnus Award; the 2003 National Science Foundation Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering; the 2003 National Title One Distinguished Graduate for Louisiana and the 2002 Black Engineer of the Year Award for a college-level educator.
