Calhoun County High School Media Center selected to host "Great Stories CLUB" book discussion program for Calhoun County Alternative Program

St. Matthews, SC-Calhoun County High School Media Center has been selected to host a three-part reading and discussion series called the "Great Stories CLUB." The library is one of 226 libraries nationwide receiving a grant from the American Library Association (ALA) to host this series, developed by the ALA Public Programs Office (PPO) and Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA). Funding was provided for this program by Oprah's Angel Network.

The Great Stories CLUB (Connecting Libraries, Underserved teens and Books) is a book discussion program created to provide troubled teens with an opportunity to read and discuss three theme-related books. Each title selected for the program focuses on a character who struggles with a serious challenge. As a recipient of this grant from ALA, CCHS Media Center will receive programming resources as well as copies of the following books for distribution to teen participants:

• "Luna" by Julie Ann Peters (Little, Brown Young Readers, 2004)

• "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" by Sherman Alexie (Little, Brown Young Readers, 2007)

• "Black and White" by Paul Volponi (Viking Juvenile, 2005)

The first program will explore Black and White by Paul Volponi and was introduced on Feb. 3, 2009. All programs will be held at Calhoun County Alternative Program. Additional books will be discussed once per month. Julia Fanning, Media Specialist, will lead a discussion of the book at each session.

For more information about the Great Stories Club at CCHS Media Center, contact Julia Fanning at (803) 874-1629. For information about the Great Stories CLUB national initiative, visit www.ala.org/greatstories.

"We are delighted that the CCHS Media Center has been chosen to host this unique series that will allow teens to read, discuss and own books that are relevant to the challenges in their lives," said Julia Fanning, CCHS Media Specialist and Great Stories Program Director.

Calhoun County High School Media Center currently serves the literacy needs of Calhoun County High School and the Calhoun County Alternative Program. The CCHS Media Center also houses a Community Resource Center which provides resources for parents and families of students. Materials may be checked out Monday - Friday from 7:45 AM - 3:45 PM.

" Congratulations and good luck! Reading is one of the best ways to expand a child's horizons. I hope the program will be utilized by many, but if only a few children are encouraged to read more, it will still be worthwhile. CCHS and Ms. Fanning, you are both great assets to Calhoun County! "
