Claflin Baseball at home today

The Claflin Panther baseball team will host will host Shaw University today in a doubleheader.

Action will begin at 3 p.m. at Mirmow Field.

S.C. State women’s soccer joins Great West Conference

The S.C. State Women’s soccer team has joined The Great West Conference as an associate member beginning with the 2009 fall season, Commissioner Ed Grom announced today. S.C. State joins the Great West after spending the last four seasons as a member of the United Soccer Conference (USC).

In addition to S.C. State, former members of the USC joining The Great West as associate members include Delaware State and Howard. The additions bring the total number of women’s soccer schools in the Great West to eight, joining Houston Baptist, NJIT, North Dakota, South Dakota and Utah Valley.

With the added members, the Great West will be broken into two four-team divisions - Delaware State, Howard, NJIT and South Carolina State will compete in the East and will play two matches against each opponent, while Houston Baptist, North Dakota, South Dakota and Utah Valley will play in the West and will play a double round robin within their own division. All eight teams will be included into the postseason tournament, which will be held November 6-7 and 9 at NJIT.

Blackville-Hilda 47, Williston-Elko 45


WILLISTON - Larry Johnson’s jumper as time expired left the Hawks in a three-way tie with North and Williston-Elko for second place in Region 4-A on Thursday.

Johnson finished with a team-high 20 points and Javaris Dukes added 10 for B-H (16-7, 10-4).

W-E (13-10, 10-4) was led by Antonio “Buster” Walker with a game-high 22 points.

The three teams will meet at 9 a.m. today in Blackville to determine which team will get a bye in a play-in tournament. The two teams which do not win a bye will face each other at 5:30 p.m. at Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School, with the winner facing the team with the bye at 2 p.m. at the same location.

North 80, Wagener-Salley 55

NORTH -- Davante James scored 28 points had eight assists and seven steals to lead North.

Melvin Pough added 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Eagles, and Ryan Jenkins, the Class 4-A Player of the Year, finished with 11 points and 10 assists.

North improves to 17-4 overall, 10-4 in the region.

Bethune-Bowman 68, Branchville 47

ROWESVILLE - Artrell Adams scored 25 points and Bennie Berry and JaMichael Sanders each had 14 in the win for the Mohawks.

Bethune-Bowman (9-15, 6-4) will open the Class A Lower State on the road Tuesday.

Dreher 76, Swansea 40

SWANSEA - Trenton Green scored 13 points in a losing effort for the Tigers.

Swansea (14-9, 6-4) clinched second in Region 5-AAA and will open the playoffs at home Tuesday against Lake Marion.

Orangeburg Prep 43, Laurence Manning 34

MANNING – Neal Smith scored 11 points to lead the Indians to a win on Thursday.

OPS (10-15) will open the SCISA Region 2-AAA tournament at 8 p.m. Monday against Wilson Hall at the Sumter Exhibition Center.

Varsity Girls

Bethune-Bowman 67, Branchville 27

ROWESVILLE -- LaQuanda Williams scored 23 points, collected 19 rebounds, 10 steals and five assists to lead the Lady Mohawks to the win.

Jasmine Shuler added 12 points and six assists and Rhonda Hook had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Bethune-Bowman (19-3, 12-0), the Region 5-A champion, will host a playoff game Monday at 7 p.m.

Orangeburg Prep 57, Laurence Manning 54

MANNING -- Lauren Holley scored 19 points to lead OPS.

Kate Edwards added 12 points for the Lady Indians; Barkley Stoudenmire and Allie Huggins each had 10. Mary Bleasdale led LMA with 10 points.

OPS, the Region 3-AAA regular season champion, will be play in the region tournament at the Sumter County Exhibition Center at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

HOLLY HILL -- Daniel Fralix scored 10 points to lead DA (!8-0).

Madison West led HHA with 10 points.

Lake Marion 46, Battery Creek

BEAUFORT - Michael Williams scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the JV Gators in their regular-season finale on Thursday.

Lake Marion finished the season 8-8.

Orangeburg Prep 37, Laurence Manning 33

MANNING – Trey Kyzer and Michael Schriver each scored 10 points to lead the JV Indians to victory on Thursday.

OPS (12-6) will open the SCISAA 2-AAA tournament at 2:15 p.m. Saturday at Wilson Hall in Sumter against Robert E. Lee Academy.

JV Girls

Orangeburg-Wilkinson 30, Richland Northeast 28


COLUMBIA -- Lasherria Sprinkle scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead O-W.

Jasmine Fox added seven points and five steals for the Bruinettes (8-8).

Orangeburg Prep 31, Laurence Manning 25

MANNING -- Rachel Kitchings scored nine and Julia Bonnette seven to lead OPS.

The Lady Indians (16-1, 8-0) play again Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Wilson Hall.

Lake Marion 36, Battery Creek 27

BEAUFORT - Samantha Haney scored 19 points I’asia Williams added eight in a regular-season ending win for the JV Lady Gators on Thursday.

Lake Marion finished the season 10-6.
