MEAC vs. SWAC: ESPN ‘strongly considering’ SCSU-Grambling matchup

Fans who wished conference champions South Carolina State and Grambling could settle the debate over the 2008 black college football championship could get the next best thing.

ESPN spokesperson Tilea Coleman confirmed Thursday that the network was “strongly considering” pitting the Bulldogs against the Tigers in this year’s MEAC/SWAC Challenge. The fifth annual contest, which matches up a team from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and Southwestern Athletic Conference for bragging rights in Football Championship Subdivision black college football, is tentatively scheduled for Labor Day Weekend at the Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla.

Neither ESPN, S.C. State nor Grambling officials have confirmed or denied talks about the possible matchup. However, Alcorn State sports information director LaToya Shields said Wednesday the school was told not to schedule Grambling for its Sept. 5 season opener because of the Tigers’ expected involvement in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge.

The two schools were reportedly in negotiations to move the contest, which would not count against Grambling in the SWAC standings.

S.C. State athletics director Charlene Johnson would only state Thursday the school was waiting on an announcement from ESPN in regard to the matchup. The same stance has also been taken by both commissioners Dennis Thomas of the MEAC and Duer Sharp of the SWAC.

The Bulldogs are slated to open the 2009 campaign Sept. 5 at Benedict College. Neither school has indicated whether discussions have taken place between them about the possibility of postponing the game in order to make the Bulldogs available.

ESPN released its Labor Day and Thursday primetime television schedule on Thursday, but did not include the MEAC/SWAC Challenge. Last year’s game, won by Hampton 17-13 over Jackson State, aired the Sunday before Labor Day on ESPN2.

The network said it would release additional games in the coming months.

This would not only be the second straight year S.C. State opened the regular season in Orlando, Fla., where they lost 17-0 to Football Bowl Subdivision foe Central Florida, but along with Grambling, their second appearance in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge.

The then-defending MEAC co-champion Bulldogs played in the inaugural event held in 2005 at Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala., and defeated then-defending SWAC champion Alabama State, led by current Minnesota Vikings’ starting quarterback Tarvaris Jackson, 27-14.

Grambling participated the following year and lost in overtime to Hampton 27-26. The 2006 game marked the last time both conferences sent their defending champions to the challenge, which the MEAC leads 3-1.

The Bulldogs finished 10-3 last season and were a perfect 8-0 in the MEAC. Despite losing only to Football Bowl Subdivision teams UCF and Clemson University and defending three-time Football Championship Subdivision champion Appalachian State, S.C. State placed second behind SWAC champion Grambling in the final SBN Sports Black College Football poll. It was the 14th Jake Gaither black college football national championship trophy won by the Tigers, who finished 11-2 overall, 8-0 in the SWAC for its 22nd conference title.

The Tigers lead the all-time series with S.C. State 9-5. The last meeting took place at the 1994 Heritage Bowl at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, with coaching legends Willie Jeffries of S.C. State and the late Eddie Robinson of Grambling on the sidelines.

The Bulldogs rallied from 11 points down thanks to two touchdowns rushing and passing from Marvin Marshall, the latter set up by a blocked punt by Kenny Bynum which was recovered by current Hunter-Kinard-Tyler head coach Jermaine Derricott at the 1-yard line, to take a 31-27 victory. Ironically, the 1994 season was the last time up until this past season the Bulldogs had won 10 games and the MEAC regular-season title outright.

S.C. State returns 13 starters from last year’s team, led by MEAC Offensive Player of the Year, running back Will Ford.

" While Grambling as a storied football PAST, it has not exactly been the powerhouse of old these past few years.

Doug Williams thanklessly labored to return respectablity, on and off the field, to the Grambling program.

This game should be a barn burner . . . "

I know Tilea. You can send her an email at the address above and just let he know you want to see SCSU on ESPN. People start saving now and you can make this an all out Disney/SCSU vacation. "

" WOW, I know nobody came on here in support of Grambling, not the school that rolls a bass drum on the field! Yeah, this is a must have, and while they are at it, add Jackson St. back on the schedule too. This should not only be a good money maker for the schools, but great practice for our (SCSU)real competitors. I'm gonna keep my comments on the WACK, opps I meant SWAC bands. Thats a whole other topic! "

" For some reason, I thought the Meac-Swac Challenge consisted of the Meac winner vs. the Swac winner. That must not be the case. "

" No one need to pump Grambling's head up, because everybody knows that Grambling is Great. We are already preparing to come to Orlando, our players are running practices at 6:00 in the morning, and our recruits are coming to college early to weight train and learn the play book. We are already pi**d off from that Hampton lost and we alumni are calling for blood, because how could The Grambling State University lose to any MEAC team. NO ONE can deny that Grambling State University is the Notre Dame of Black College Football and SCSU is Lincoln University (PA). We agree on one thing, move the game to Atlanta, Black America's Capital meets Black America's Team, Grambling, and this would grow the game. "

" The Bulldogs will take on anybody that comes their way, even the University of South Carolina. It would be a good match between Grambling and SCSU. I like to see if the Black College Poll need to re-group during their picking, or other polls are more reliable. I'm still pressing for the missing pieces for the SCSU team( hot shot reciever). I hope buddy got a plan..? "

" MEAC IS THE BEST FOOTBALL CONFERENCE IN ALL HBCU PERIOD. IF IT WAS NOT SCSU, THEN HAMPTON, FAMU, DEL STATE, BCC, AND NORFOLK STATE ALL WOULD BEAT GRAMBLING. SO IF YOU WANT TO SHUT UP THE SWAC, MAKE THIS GAME HAPPEN. IT WOULD BE A BLOW OUT IN FAVOR OF SCSU. WHO EVER MAKE THE DECISIONS FOR THIS GAME, JUST MAKE IT HAPPEN. AND GIVE US OUR BLACK COLLEGE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY FROM GRAMBLING. WE DO NOT NEED THEM TO SHINE IT FOR US. WE'RE GOOD. "

" Bring it on Grambling, the last time we played you we beat you, please Lord make this game a reality. This would go a long way for HBCU football. Bring the game to the Georgia Dome though. "

" I just mentioned this game scenario to someone who didn't go to college, and is self-proclaimed ignorant to HBCU football. What I explained to him is, back in the day... yeah, schools like Gramling, Southern, Hampton, Howard, and FAMU were pumped up on the street for one reason or another... but don't be fooled. 1st: The MEAC is better than the SWAC. 2nd: The Bulldogs historically are in the top echelon of the MEAC and HBCU's. Now we went down there and beat up on ASU.... Now Gramling faces them same fate. "Why I always gotta prove my love?" It's gonna be some furniture moving down in Orlando if ESPN approves this game. "

" The Bible says "Jealousy is as cruel as the grave" Grambling is Black College Football, nothing else needs to be said. WE ARE GRAMBLING "

enough_already wrote on Feb 13, 2009 9:51 AM:

" ESPN, SCSU and Grambling really need to make this happen. This way the whole nation can see that the real power house in HBCU football are the SCSU Bulldogs. First of all most knowlegable HBCU football fans know that the MEAC is the strongest football conference of all HBCU conferences. Secondly SCSU closed out their regular season schedule by beating their last three oponents 143-0. And finally SCSU played the three time defending 1-AA (FCS) national champions Appalachian State; where the Bulldogs where in the game down to the wire. I don't remember Grambling making it to the FCS (1-AA) playoffs.

Hopefully this game will get scheduled so the rest of the nation will know that their are other HBCU football teams besides Grambling and Southern. GO BIG BLUE!!!!!!! "
