Blacks 'don't love themselves,' rapper David Banner tells crowd

Rapper, actor and philanthropist David Banner told students gathered at South Carolina State University's Martin Luther King Jr. Auditorium that black people should not accept media portrayals of African-Americans.

In the midst of Black History Month, Banner, the graduate of two historically black colleges and universities, stunned an audience of more than 300

African-Americans with the accusation: "African-Americans don't love themselves."

"Black people have accepted what the media have portrayed them to be," Banner said. "We have to work to repaint the picture of black folks."

Banner's appearance kicked off the second annual Hip-Hop Symposium, sponsored by the Miller F. Whittaker Library in collaboration with the Campus Activity Board's "Awakening Lecture Series."

The theme this year is "Black on Black Crime."

In a question-and-answer session, Banner challenged black women in attendance to explain why they perm and straighten their hair.

In response came the defense that "hair perming" is equated with being able to get a decent job as a professional and not being viewed as a threat by bosses who are usually of a different race.

"This is what I mean when I say black people don't love themselves," Banner said. "Perming your hair is a clear example of 'black-on-black crime' and media control. Black-on-black crime is not just a black person committing a violent act against another black person."

Focusing deeper on the media's impact, Banner said the continuing depiction of blacks as aggressive and as a threat to society lowers the value of black life.

"Blacks have accepted the way they are portrayed in the media as a reality," Banner said. "This sad reality makes it easier for a black person to commit a crime against other people of color."

Touching on a recent issue in the news, Banner labeled as unfair the media coverage of domestic violence allegations against singer Chris Brown regarding striking his girlfriend, Pop singer Rihanna.

"Chris Brown is being convicted and character assassinated in the media and we don't even know what Rihanna did yet," Banner said.

Banner emphasized the importance of African-American couples staying together to properly raise a child in a world much different from when their parents were growing up.

"It's up to you to raise your children," Banner said. "If you don't, someone else will."

The mission of the Hip-Hop Symposium is to inform students about the crisis of black-on-black crime and encourage dialogue.

"We hope that this symposium will bring awareness to a very important social issue in our community," said Sherman Pyatt, coordinator of collection development.

"We hope to encourage our students, faculty, staff and the Orangeburg community to identify problems, search for answers and discuss these issues in a critical manner," he said.

" Mikeutsey: My opinion is based on the fact that David Banner came to SCSU and stated that the media portrays black folks as aggressive and angry. No other rap artist, metal artist, or county artist made these comments. Mr. Banner made theses comments, and by doing so opens himself up for debate. Mr. Banner places the blame on the media. However, as I easily pointed out, his lyrics do nothing to change the idea that black folks are aggressive and angry, as he says. I as well as my children can differentiate easily between an entertainer, and a role model. Mr. Banner, whom I had never heard of before this article, must think of himself as an entertainer. He is far from being an intellectual, or a person for anyone to be inspired by. We can easily debate Mr. Banner’s comments back and forth. So we should just cut to the chase. Racism is no longer a viable reason for someone to claim that they can’t be successful in life. Anyone in society can get ahead with hard work, character, and drive. A persons hair style doesn’t in anyway influence their employment prospects. Racism as a political tool is often used to try and make white people shy away at the risk of being called racist. But soon this tactic will no longer work. They will only bow to that for so long. Stop doing your best to prolong something that has long since been over. Slavery has been dead in the U.S. for more than a 100 years. What needs to happen for you to move on, an apology perhaps? Fine, I am sorry for something that happened long before me, and neither you nor I had any control over. What about Native American Indians? They were massacred by the thousands. Entire races were obliterated from the face of the earth. And they have seemed to do very well in America. However, slavery and racism is still in use in many 3rd world countries. I can’t wait for Jesse Jackson, Jim Clyburn, AL Sharpton, Ted Kennedy, and Tom Daschle do something with their millions of dollars to stop real racism today, or Tom Daschle could just pay his taxes. We have a black AMERICAN President. This is America, for ALL Americans. So stop letting people tell you why you can’t succeed in life, and starting living for yourself. "

" o wow once again i must recite the same thing i tell kids everyday...it all balls down to people always having something to say...i loved the point made about a "thug" no having a specific look, which many of us seem to forget, but despite mr. banners' appearance and back ground what he said made sense, its the same message that has been said by countless others, why should we analyze his message so much because of how he makes his money?...HELLO??? its a business...violence, sexual intercourse, profanity sell..uncut stuff sells...if you are such a great person why would you have even looked at or listened to his music? HuH? see its alot comes to play into this, but we can't just jump on people for their decisions because we can't make them for em'. Nice message i am(african american, female) and it is true sometimes i am not comfortable being me, or being black. Period point blank...we have stated the obvious now its time to work on getting better... "

" African americans, as all americans, need to love themselves, or more specifically, have pride in themselves. Stop wearing your pants down around you butts and take more responsibility for your families. It is time for us to stop blaming "the man" got out and work for what we want. Of course some of us already do, but some still want to sit back and complain. Complain about why things dont change, but then dont go vote. Know every lyric to a rap song but dont watch the news to stay informed. I am not trying to streotype all african americans, but we know this applies to some of us. And yes, We said US.

Banner is right to talk about pride, but to use chris brown as an example is crazy.

SCSU should continue the speaker series, but should also get speakers from all points of view. Liberal and conservative. Black and White and all races. Sponsor debates so that all points of view can be heard.

Its time for SCSU to grow....its time "

" It is very common for abusive men to feel they have the right to control their women in all aspects of life, even down to what they are ALLOWED to wear and how they do their hair. So it should be no surprise that David Banner not only feels the need to defend Chris Brown but feels he is somehow entitled to DICTATE how Black women should wear their hair. Perhaps he should join Mr. Brown in his anger management classes as it is obvious they are BOTH in dire need of them... "

" AmericanValues......

let's start with the lyrics to the song, since that is all you seem to base your opinion on.

Let me back up a bit....HAVE YOU CHECKED YOUR KIDS CD COLLECTION?

Now check yours!!!! And pull out Eminem, 50cent, Beastie Boyz, Led Zeplin,or and other Gothic or Heavy Metal Band.....Now what you will find is lets see....Robbing, Killing, Suicide, Blood, Gore, Dark Sinister type music!

Did I mention to take yours and your kids copy of lil wayne out of the cd player while making this comment.

Hell even some Country...u got folks committing suicide because of love or lack thereof...BUT...you choose the lyrics of a hip hop artists to make your point....therefore once again making D. Banner point that much more valid to a certain degree.

That wasn't a defense....he said we are passing judgment upon Chris Brown when we do not know what Rhiana did....that is not coming to defense of someone...That is keeping your mouth shut no drawing a conclusion without knowing the facts. Since all of you are making him guilty...DO you know that he wasn't even arrested for Domestic Violence..nor was he charged for Domestic Violent...as of yet but you have already sentenced him to 25 to life

He was charged with MAKING CRIMINAL THREATS, until he is charged and convicted...He is just as innocent as I am and SOME of you...lol

Next....!

Have A Nice Day! "

" As far as David Banner looking like a thug, there was only one or two people on here that made a comment about that. Not everyone thinks that he is dressed like a thug. He is well dressed in this photo with the article. A nice golf shirt. But his mentality, music and comments portray a whole different picture. He is very contradicting with his representations. Meaning his lyrics are degrading to women no matter what color they are and then he wants to go to SCSU and "preach" about how the media portrays black people. Sounds like he is part of the problem not the solution. "

" On a lighter note, Izod is the label; polo is the style. But can anyone posting to this article describe a thug? Can you look in Webster's dictionary for the definition of a thug and right next to it is a picture depicting what a thug actually looks like? Dictionary.com defines thug as "a cruel or vicious ruffian, robber, or murderer." That still doesn't tell me or you what a thug looks like. Would you consider the guy standing on the corner with a hoodie and baggy pants on a thug? What about the guy in the three piece suit...is he a thug? The point is you can walk up next to someone and not know the difference. Looks can be very deceiving. Many people have been saying that now that we have an Afro-American President we can't play the race card. However, I believe that race will always be an issue, but it is not an excuse for our shortcomings. Some of you say how can he defend Chris Brown. Well its like Mike Utsey said, "Innocent until proven guilty." Either way, if he did put his hands on her, he's wrong. But that doesn't give a woman the right to put her hands on a man. As far as the hair thing goes, the way you style your hair (men and women) plays a role in obtaining a job. A large afro or locks may be frowned upon by an employer. As far as I'm conerned as long as its kept neat then I don't see a problem but that's just my view. His lyrics may bother some of you but thats what they are, "Lyrics." As far as I'm concerned he's just rappin. "Rap - Slang. to talk or discuss, esp. freely, openly, or volubly." His lyrics could be inspired by life experiences or they could come from creativity, either way I don't know if the man actually does what he says in his lyrics. The bottom line is we as black people must accept who we are and not what the media portrays us to be. Most of us are non-violent, work hard for a living, and educated. Yes, there are some that fall through the cracks, but we can't just brush them under the rug and say its not our problem. We must embrace them and show them another alternative. "

Just take for instance his song in which the chorous is "real girls get down on tha floor" except he uses the b word intead of girls. He then tells what he'll explicitly do to them and hollers to his dope slangin boys to wave their hands in the air. Is this who represents you? or SCSU? why then have someone like that come and talk to kids? wow.... "

" You are exactly right "mikeutsey." people say the picture of Banner look like a "thug" but where did that "thought" come from. Banner is well dressed and groomed. This way of thinking is a clear sign of media control. This is exactly Banner's point. People are using media control to rebut against their not dope by media control. open your minds first "commenters" before you open your mouth and on "perming" your hair-- African-American women really needs to start reforming themselves from social practices that was used to compete with white woman for jobs in the work place. So, I get it then but not now. Most that use those chemical treatments (perm) and straighten their hair experience breakage, hair thining, it falls out in patches or completely, then you got to run down to the local Asian WEAVE store to buy some hair to continue to up hold a illusion. Obama is President everyone black and white can breathe easier NOW! "

American Values wrote on Feb 25, 2009 2:43 AM:

" Dear Mikeutsey: I know why he is defending Chris Brown, and I quote from his website, “Chris Brown is like my little brother,” Banner says. And why do most people placing blogs think he is a thug without a clue? And I quote from his song “9mm”; “if nig*** wanna ride tonight”; “I got a 9mm ready to go off any minute, so you can feel it, because of the law I had to conceal it” Well he clearly states that he is breaking the law by illegally carrying a weapon. “If you fu** around we gon’ make me reveal it”, once again pointing and presenting is another violation of the law. Continuing to quote the prestigious Mr. Banner, “Nig** you a pus**, hope you got nine lives, I can hit a nig** with my nine, nine times”. Mr. Banner goes on the say that with his 9 bullets that 9 mothers will be crying and 9 preachers will be preaching for the 9 people that he murders. I sure am glad he is not aggressive and a threat to society. Once again, quoting him from the story in the T & D, he is doing a great job of “repainting the picture of black folks”. But don’t worry he is a family man, how bout this quote? “And shove 9 inches of di** in 99 hoes”. I am glad Mr. Banner gave me a lesson in morality. Mr. Banner doesn’t need to repaint the image of black people. Most black people are like most white, Asian, Hispanic, or whatever color you like of AMERICAN. Most of all Americans are hard working and very intelligent. Mikeutsy, you said he was wearing a sweater. He is clearly wearing a polo shirt in the photo. And I also appreciate you playing the race card, you took the typical response of someone with no educated, or reasonable response. I see the democrat party has trained you well. And before you call me racist, I wanted Condoleezza Rice to be president. Condoleezza Rice, President Obama, and Jim Clyburn are what an educated, well groomed, productive member of society looks like. Mr. Banner looks like a thug and portrays himself as one on his website. Mikeutsy, don’t he so angry, just because someone disagrees with a black AMERICAN doesn’t mean they are racist. You are taking the bait of the liberal left and running with it. Please stop and think. You can’t possible know my skin color or anyone else’s on the blog. You don’t know if I am white or black. Are my children of mixed race? This is 2009, don’t be so narrow minded. You can find more of Mr. Banners intelligent and world changing lyrics at metrolyrics.com "

What about this picture depicts THUG?

What I see when I look at this picture is a well groomed black man with an Izod sweater. What do you see?

You know what that means right...I don't have to tell you...you already know!!!!

Second...He is not defending any actions by Chris Brown....reason being is that none of us know what Chris Brown did or didn't do. Nor do we know what Rhiana did or didn't do. He is basically defending a man's constitutional right of being Innocent UNTIL proven GUILTY, would you not want to have that same RIGHT bestowed upon yourself.

And as far as Media Depiction....you posters are just basically proving his very point. So on that note he is absolutely right and you took the "bait"....not smart!

I will reserve the remainder of my comments until after I read your responses....I got a little knowledge to drop on you and some more "bait" for you FREE thinkers to take a bite of.

More to Say!

Have a Nice Day "

People please. These kind of statements "stir the pot". "

" Thanks again for bringing forth life as it is today. Mr. Banner, the truth is that blacks are prejudiced against ourselves. It's not the texture of our hair that should matter. What matters is our education, self-confidence, self-esteem, integrity and character. Theses are the things that will bring forth life.

I'm a sister with locked hair. I am not my hair. We as a people must stop looking at the surface and dig deeper to see the true fruit that lies within. Remember it's the tongue that has the power to destroy or to build up. We must know our history and use it to enlarge our territory. As far as Rihanna and Chris Brown, they need to throw the book at him. Our young people are viewing the actions of these individuals and re-enacting them because it's happening in hip-hop society. So they believe this makes it ok. At no time should a man hit a woman under any circumstances. This is the type of nonsense that the whites used in the days of old that the blacks were inferior and are incapable of governing ourselves. "

If this is his quote then explain the thug picture that accompanies the article. I also am questioning his songs lyrics. He raps about killing people who talk to the police and death to all snitches. If this is not aggressive and threatening behavior I don't know what is. Why then was he chosen to speak on the very subject that he uses to sell records which is violent and aggressive behavior towards all people. What ashame SCSU hosted him... No wonder they have problems "

" I'm still trying to figure out what how a woman styles her hair has to do with black on black crime, and insted of us worring about black on black crime in orangeburg I think we need to worry about crime as a whole. My husband and his family tell me about the days when they used to leave their doors unlocked and let their kids play in the yard but, now days after dark I'm not going out into the city. If you read the crime blotter it's rediculous.

On another note as for as the hair. I don't think it matters how you where your hair but, I yes am a white female but, I have naturally curly hair and it is very unruly and frizzy so I straighten and have relaxed my hair but, I don't think that is a crime good grief. When we fix our hair we are just trying to make it more managable and smooth. It just looks nice and I love alot of the hair styles black woman where alot of which I wish my hair would hold but, even with like 5 bottles of hair spray it wouldn't. Keyword here if everyone wants to quit judging people by skin color then it's time to give it a chance but, insted of keep bring up issues in our community about one color try attacking issues that are going to bring us all together. "

" David Banner is wrong about the whole Chris Brown and Rihanna thing. Is he saying that it is ok for a man to beat up a woman if she did something to deserve it? I don't care what she did, Chris could have walked away or restrained her. This was not an act of self defense, that would be different...and understandable.

Also, females perming their hair does not correlate with not loving yourself. Many females may not understand why they do it at all, simply because their parents did it to them to make their hair more manageable and neat and they just continued the practice. This is not to say that locks or unpermed hair cannot be considered neat or manageable but to each their own; in this era it is more a style preference. I don't think perming hair makes anyone appear more job worthy over someone with unpermed hair (as long as the hair is kept neat).

Oh, and if anyone is depending on the media's portryal of any race as an actual depiction of it then they lack common sense; no educated person would dare make that mistake (I hope)! "

The only valid point he made throughout this article was regard Chris Brown's character assassination. However I did see a racist person in the media, Jim Clyburn. On WIS TV’s website, it quotes Jim staying that anyone who opposes the stimulus package is racist, in so many words. The only black on black crime I see is in the democrat party. It seems to me that Mr. Clyburn is portraying blacks as victims, not as a threat. And where is the “CHANGE”? Jim Clyburn has been playing the race car for years, and with a Black President in office you think he would “CHANGE”. Back to Mr. Banner, he states that Chris Brown is being convicted without a trial. Weren’t all the Troopers convicted the same way, without a trial? And when the trial was over the 1st Trooper was found innocent. Out of all the videos, I saw only 2 Troopers that needed to be fired.
