Bulldogs move into second place in MEAC
By SCSU Sports Information Friday, March 06, 2009WINSTON-SALEM - South Carolina State closed out the game with an 11-3 run to claim an 86-73 win over Winston-Salem State on Thursday night.
The contest was the final regular season game for the Bulldogs who improved to 16-13 on the season. Coach Tim Carter’s team opens play in the Mid-Eastern Athetic Conference Tourney on Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. against an opponent to be determined. S.C. State is seeded second behind top-seeded Morgan State.
Jason Johnson had 22 points and Jason Flagler had 18 along with a game-high 10 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs. Also in double figures for S.C. State were Jimmy Williams with 16 points along with eight rebounds and Josh Jackson with 12 points.
The host Rams were led by Jamal Durham with 16 points with only two in the second half. Jemarcus McClinton added 14 along with seven boards. Brian Fisher had 11 and Isiah Tucker finished with 10.
The Bulldogs’ victory avenged an earlier 68-62 setback to the Rams in Orangeburg on December 6.
Lady Bulldogs fall to Winston-Salem State
Rene Rector scored a career-high-tying 24 points as the Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams closed their 2008-09 season the same way that they closed last year, with a victory over the Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina State University in MEAC women’s basketball action Thursday evening.
Rector tied her career high with 24 points as she equaled her 24 point offensive output that came on Jan. 18, 2008 versus Howard University as she hit eight of her 14 field goals Tuesday evening including a career-high six three-point field goals as she led the Lady Rams to their sixth victory of the season.
Playing in the final game of her college career, WSSU redshirt senior guard Keoshia Worthy joined Rector in double figures with 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists as he played a career-high 40 minutes, helping to lead the Lady Rams to the win on senior night.
The Lady Bulldogs close out the season with a 6-22 record.
