Calvary Baptist brings new twist to Easter event
By T&D STAFF Friday, March 27, 2009NEESES -- There are egg tosses, egg drops and certainly egg hunts galore. But this year, the good folks at Calvary Baptist Church in Neeses are inviting the public to their inaugural Egg Dump. Featuring 12,000-plus of the plastic orbs, it easily qualifies as a mega egg event.
Free to the public, the Egg Dump will be held on Saturday, April 4, beside the Giant Flea Market at the intersection of U.S. 321 and S.C. 4 in Neeses beginning with registration at 4 p.m. and the Egg Dump at 5 p.m. Free hot dogs and drinks will be served.
Calvary Minister of Students Jonathan Pearson says he got the idea while brainstorming a fun form of outreach for the area.
"I was lying in bed one night thinking about what to do for Easter. We wanted something different that this community has never seen before," Pearson said. "This is the only event of it's kind that I've ever heard of. Even though this is only our first year, I think it will grow into something memorable."
The concept for the Egg Dump involves a dump truck that will be backed up to a small, gently rolling slope. Then, like an oversized piñata, the avalanche of eggs will be deposited on the hill for the surrounding children to grab.
"Actually, safety is the first thing we thought about," Pearson said. "Our people will be protecting the children around the truck, keeping them a safe distance from it before the eggs are released."
Pearson says there will be a "guaranteed prize in every egg," ranging from items like candy and other small prizes that can fit inside the egg, to larger prizes like a video gaming system.
"There will be a redemption table at the Egg Dump where participants can turn in certificates found in the eggs for the larger prizes," Pearson said. "Although there won't be any teaching going on during the Egg Dump, our hope is that this can become a tradition for the people in our area while we reach out to them, getting out the message we love them and Christ loves them."
