BAMBERG – Bamberg Police Department officers, responding to a call about a domestic fight in progress on March 28 on Pharmacy Street, heard loud yelling and banging noises coming from inside the residence as they approached the residence, according to an incident report.

A Bamberg man who exited the front door at the arrival of police told them he was just leaving to go home, but the officers detained him after a 39-year-old woman and her daughter inside the house told police an argument had turned violent, the report said.

When police looked inside the house, they saw chairs and objects overturned, the report said. The victim had bruises on the side of her face and was taken by police to the hospital where pictures were taken, the report said.

The man, who kept saying, “It wasn’t supposed to happen this way,” was handcuffed and charged with criminal domestic violence, according to the incident report. The victim told police she would press charges against him. The man and woman have a daughter in common, the report said.

In other reports:

* Police are investigating an apparent break-in at Miracle Paint and Body Shop on Calhoun Street which allegedly occurred between 6 p.m. on March 28 and 10 a.m. on March 29. The owner of the business told officers that a catalytic converter valued at $80 was missing from a Chevrolet Blazer.

* An Allendale man was told by police to “get his license straightened out” after he could not produce a valid license at a traffic stop on March 27. A check with the DMV showed that the 21-year-old had a suspended license for driving under suspension and for failure to pay traffic tickets.

* A 16-year-old Barnwell youth allegedly took money from the Bamberg Pizza Hut on March 29. An employee tipped off another employee who advised the supervisor to check the safe. When the supervisor did so, he found that $165 was missing, the report said. The Barnwell juvenile had allegedly been seen crawling behind the counter and removing the money earlier in the day, the report said.

According to the incident report, officers contacted the juvenile’s mother and spoke with the youth, who initially denied any knowledge of the theft.

Later in the evening of the same day, police filed a supplemental report when the mother of the suspect showed up at Pizza Hut to say that her son said he did take the money but was unsure of the amount. The juvenile returned $79, and a custodial release was done on him, the report said, and he was turned over to his mother.

* Officers observed a vehicle parked behind Richard Carroll Primary School on McMillan Street at 11 p.m. on April 1 and stopped to investigate. When they approached the vehicle, according to the report, they smelled a strong odor of burning marijuana and noticed a green, leafy substance on the shirt of one of the men. The two men in the vehicle admitted to using marijuana, and a search turned up a bag of about an ounce of marijuana on one of the men and a loose, leafy substance scattered about. Both Bamberg men were arrested and charged with simple possession of marijuana.
