Sgt. James R. Jamie Gartman

Funeral services for Sgt. James Raymond "Jamie" Gartman, 29, of St. Matthews, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at Dukes-Harley Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. David Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in the West End Cemetery in St. Matthews, with Military Honors.

Sgt. Gartman died Saturday morning, April 4, from injuries received in an automobile accident.

He was born in Columbia, a son of Jimmy Gartman and Linda Jenkins Gartman Spires. He was a graduate of Calhoun County High School and joined the U.S. Marine Corps after graduation. He served eight years on active duty and graduated from college in his off time. After leaving active duty, he was employed with Calhoun Carports and was an active member of the S.C. Army National Guard.

Survivors include a daughter, Caroline Gracie Gartman of St. Matthews; mother and stepfather, Linda and Jimmy Spires of St. Matthews; his father of Florida; two sisters, Jennifer (Brian) Carroll of Irmo and Stacy (Charlie) Gable of St. Matthews; one brother, James L. (Verne) (Melissa) Spires of St. Matthews; two half-brothers, Jay and Cody Gartman of Orangeburg; grandparents, James Raymond and Hazel Jenkins of Columbia and Robert and Ernestine Hungerpeler of St. Matthews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Dukes-Harley Funeral Home of Orangeburg.
