Spurrier not the only man with his eye on the offense

Steve Spurrier won’t be the only person watching the South Carolina Gamecocks’ offense intently during today’s 1 p.m. Garnet and Black spring game at Williams-Brice Stadium.

Perhaps the Gamecocks’ biggest offensive coup of signing day 2009, Calhoun County wide receiver Alshon Jeffery, will be in attendance.

“I am just going to be looking at the whole team,” the future Gamecock said Friday night. “I’m just looking at everything.”

Jeffery said he has been to Columbia a few times since signing day, and he said he feels “pretty good” about Gamecocks quarterbacks Stephen Garcia and Reid McCollum. But, Jeffery said the majority of what he has seen from the duo has come in practice.

“I catch watch them practice, but I want to see how the game is for them,” Jeffery said.

Chances are Jeffery will get to see more than Garcia and McCollum. The duo figure to take most of the snaps, but it’s likely that backups Aramis Hillary and Zac Brindise will see reps as well.

The quartet of passers will throw to a receiver group that has been led through the spring by Moe Brown, Jason Barnes and Tori Gurley. Perhaps diplomatically, Jeffery said he won’t spend too much time sizing up his competition for a starting spot. But, USC fans shouldn’t be surprised to see the prized, 6-3, 214 pound receiver sneaking a few peaks. While the trio has impressed at times, Spurrier and his staff have kept Jeffery on their minds when making plans for the upcoming season.

“Out of the five receivers we signed, we’ve told two or three of them that they have a legitimate chance to play this year,” Gamecocks wide receivers coach Steve Spurrier Jr. told GamecockCentral.com in a report that ran on the Web site April 1. “One of them is Alshon Jeffery, I’ll tell you that. But I am looking forward to those guys getting here.”

Also attending Saturday’s spring game will be highly recruited Calhoun County offensive lineman Eric Mack, who has been on a whirlwind tour of colleges as of late. Thus far, Mack, who said he has around 15 offers, has been to Auburn, Georgia Tech and, earlier this week, Clemson.

Admission to the game is free to the public with stadium gates scheduled to open at 11:30 a.m. The Fairgrounds parking lot will be closed for the Easter weekend. According to the University of South Carolina’s athletics Web site, approximately 5,700 parking spaces have been identified near the stadium. Those spots, according to the site, will include:

• The Farmers Market will have 2,000 spaces available for $10 beginning at 7:30 a.m.

• ETV lots will have 800 spaces available for $10 beginning at 10 a.m.

• USC’s Key Road lot will have 600 spaces available for free beginning at 10 a.m.

• The Armory will have 1,000 spaces available for $10 beginning at 10 a.m. (Enter off of Bluff Road)

• Capital City Stadium on Assembly Street will have 800 spaces available for $5 beginning at 10 a.m.

• Seawell’s on Rosewood will have 500 spaces available for $5 beginning at 9 a.m.

Also, for those unable to attend, the game will be streamed live for free on www.gamecocksonline.com.
