 Claflin baseball wins first SIAC tournament game

Albany, GA- Claflin University’s baseball team, seeded 3rd in the Eastern Division, participated in their first SIAC Tournament Championship, Thursday morning defeating Miles College. 9-3. The Panthers had 13 hits and no errors in the contest. Sean Polk went the distance and struck out six for the Panthers, allowing just six hits in the nine inning game.

Chauncey Davis went 2-5 with two runs scored, a double and stole two bases. Trivon Howard was 2-5 and scored a run. Wesley Burgess 2-5 with a run batted in. Paul Carpenter 2-5 with a run scored. Julius McDougal 2-4 with a run scored and a run batted in. Andy Till 2-4 with a run batted in and a run scored. With the win the Panthers advanced into the winners bracket, with a 4:00 pm match-up with the top seed in the East, the Rams of Albany State University.

Claflin baseball players earn SIAC postseason honors

Claflin outfielder Trivion Howard was named to the All-SIAC first team Thursday.

First baseman Robert Platts and shortstop Christian Carlos were selected to the conference’s second team.

S.C. State’s Brown 6th in Decathlon; Vance injured at MEAC

GREENSBORO, NC – South Carolina State’s Leighton Brown is sixth at the halfway point of the Decathlon at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Track and Field Championship being conducted at the Irwin Belk Track Complex. The competition wraps up Saturday.

Brown, a freshman javelin thrower from Bluffton, finished third in the shot, fourth in both the 100 meters and 400 meters and tied for eighth in both the long jump and high jump in amassing 3148 points. Norfolk State’s Darris Shelton leads the competition with 3,609 after five events.

S.C. State’s Tempest Vance, one of the favorites in the Heptathlon, was in third place with 2,129 points after three events before suffering an ankle injury in the high jump and pulling up at the start of the 200 meters.

The Anderson junior, whose best event is the 400 meter hurdles, was third in both the 100 meter hurdles and shot, and fifth in the high jump before the injury. She had earlier set a MEAC indoor record in the Pentathlon with 3,670 points. Her status for the remaining four events is doubtful.

Coppin State’s Natoya Baird leads the Heptathlon with 3,123 points after four events.

Most field events and the majority of the running events get underway on Friday.

Branchville 16, Cross 0

BRANCHVILLE -- Tyler Metts, Tyler Looper, Jared Shieder and Ryan Kirby combined to no-hit Cross in the first round of the Class A playoffs.

At the plate, Metts was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a home run and three runs scored; Cody Peeples was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, Grayson Garrett was 2-for-3, Looper was 1-for-1 with a triple and two runs scored.

Bowman Academy 7, Glen Forest 2 (Wednesday)

BOWMAN -- Jordan Gunnells (2-3) picked up the win, striking out 13.

Gunnells was also 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles. Bowman Academy will play Laurens Academy in the Class A semi-finals Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Varsity Softball

Branchville 17, Hardeeville 3

BRANCHVILLE -- Elizabeth Ecklar wsa 2-for-4 with a double and Brooke Easterling was 1-for-2 wit ha triple to lead Branchville to a Class A playoff opening win.

Katie Pruett picked up the win for the Lady Yellow Jackets. Branchville is scheduled to travel to Johnsonville for to take on Johnsonville Saturday at 5 p.m.

Edisto 3, Bishop England 0

CHARLESTON - Kayse Sheetz struck out four batters in seven innings and Caitlin Bishop drove in two runs to lift the Lady Cougars to a first-round Class 2-A road playoff victory on Thursday.

Hailey Carson had two hits and threw out three Lady Bishop baserunners for Edisto, who will face the Waccamaw/Marion winner on Saturday.

Varsity SoccerBLACKVILLE -- Blackville-Hilda pulled off the penalty-kick victory over Bamberg-Ehrhardt.

Blackville-Hilda 0, Bamberg-Ehrhardt 0 (Blackville-Hilda 3-2 PK)

Casey Toomer and Dylan Searson scored penalty kicks for Bamberg-Ehrhardt. Jacob Halmon had 16 saves for B-E, and coach David Choi praised the play of Tario Preacher.

B-E (11-5-1) travels to Fox Creek Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Branchville 8, Williston-Elko 0

WILLISTON - Willie Brown scored four goals and Zach Robinson and Josh Romme each added two goals in the victory for the Yellow Jackets on Thursday.

Robinson and Timothy Prince each had two assists for Branchville, which rebounded from Wednesday’s 4-3 loss to Edisto. Robinson had a ‘hat trick’ with three goals in a losing effort for the Yellow Jackets.

Branchville (9-7) will play host to Blackville-Hilda on Monday.

Post 4 American Legion Baseball

The Orangeburg Post 4 American Legion baseball team will hold tryouts May 9 at 1 p.m. at Mirmow Field. Players are to be at the tryouts whether they are in the playoffs or not. St. George Post 105 will not have team this year, and all players who played for Post 105 are invited to tryout for Post 4.

Dale Fry Memorial Golf Tournament

The Edisto High School Booster Club will hold the Dale Frye Memorial Golf Tournament Saturday, May 9 at Hillcrest Golf Course. The tournament will have a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

Format is four-man, Captain’s Choice. Cost is $40 per person or $160 per team. Pre-registration is requested with space limited to the first 32 teams registered. Mulligans and tee busters are available.
