Local teams continue postseason play today
By EMERY GLOVER, T&D Sports Writer Tuesday, May 05, 2009 The quest for state championships continue today as local teams gear up for their respective playoff battles.
Defending SCISA Class 2-A champion Calhoun Academy will continue its title defense when it takes on W.W. King. The best-of-three series begins in Batesburg and will shift to St. Matthews on Wednesday. The Knights defeated the Cavaliers in both of this year’s regular season meetings.
Bowman Academy hopes to exact some measure of revenge when they take on defending Class A champion Laurens Academy. This will be the first meeting between the two teams since last season’s championship series. The Crusaders swept the Bulldogs in two games to take the SCISA Class A title.
Branchville’s baseball and softball teams are hoping to avoid elimination today when they host their respective opponents.
The Lady Yellow Jackets fell to Johnsonville 10-0 on Saturday placing them in the loser’s bracket. Branchville will now have to defeat Hardeeville to set up a rematch with the Lady Flashes on Wednesday. The Branchville baseball team was also defeated by Johnsonville 18-7. They will take on Timmonsville for the right to advance to the District VIII title game.
Bamberg-Ehrhardt’s Lady Raiders are also fighting for their playoff lives. A crucial 7-1 loss to Lake View forced B-E into the loser’s bracket where they will face Hannah-Pamplico. The winner will face Lake View on Wednesday.
