South Carolina State

SCSU golfer to vie for PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship


PORT ST. LUCIE, FL - The South Carolina State men’s golf team will be among

twenty-four (24) squads vying for titles at the 23rd PGA Minority Collegiate Golf

Championship at the PGA Golf Club Friday-Sunday (May 8-10).

The three-day, 54-hole stroke play competition will be played at the PGA’s Ryder

Course, a 6,835-yard, par 72 layout. The groups will play 18 holes daily.

Championships will be decided in both men’s Division I and Division II, as well

as in a women’s division and in independent competition.

S.C. State is one of twelve teams competing for the Division I crown. Other

participating teams in the division are Alabama A&M, Alabama State, defending

champion Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M, Hampton, North Carolina Central,

Savannah State, Tennessee State, Texas Southern, Texas-Pan American and Winston-

Salem State.

Making up first-year head coach Herman Belton’s Bulldog squad are seniors

Robert Biggers of Orlando, Fla., and Byron Bush of Aiken; and Mexico natives Hector

Arroyave, a junior; and freshmen Roberto Cacho and Alejandro Bernardini.

S.C. State won three straight titles (1986-88) in the early years of the event, but has not finished any higher than fifth the last seven seasons.

The Division II field will be made up of Benedict, Fayetteville State, Kentucky State, Lincoln (PA), Morehouse, Paine and Virginia State.

Branchville 4, Edisto 3 (PK)


EDISTO -- Zach Robinson, Willie Brown and Josh Roome scored goals in regulation for Branchville.

Robinson, Brown, Roome and John Hitopoulis each scored PK goals for Branchville. Branchville head coach Craig Porter praised the play of Jeff Taylor.

Branchville (9-7) begins the state playoffs Tuesday.

Post 4 American Legion Baseball


The Orangeburg Post 4 American Legion baseball team will hold tryouts May 9 at 1 p.m. at Mirmow Field. Players are to be at the tryouts whether they are in the playoffs or not. St. George Post 105 will not have team this year, and all players who played for Post 105 are invited to tryout for Post 4.

Dale Fry Memorial Golf Tournament

The Edisto High School Booster Club will hold the Dale Frye Memorial Golf Tournament Saturday, May 9 at Hillcrest Golf Course. The tournament will have a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

Format is four-man, Captain’s Choice. Cost is $40 per person or $160 per team. Pre-registration is requested with space limited to the first 32 teams registered. Mulligans and tee busters are available.

City of Parks and Recreation

Youth Summer Basketball Deadline Extended


Summer basketball registration has been extended at the Parks & Recreation Department, 367 Green Street. Children ages 8-12 on May 31st are eligible to register. The registration fee is $45 with a $25 discount for City of Orangeburg residents providing valid proof of residency. Spots are available on a first come, first served basis. Cheer Carolina Cheerleading Clinic

Cheer Carolina is a Youth Cheerleading Clinic that teaches techniques and basic cheerleading skills. Improve coordination, physical fitness, flexibility and your ability to work with others in a positive, noncompetitive environment. Registration dates are May 16 & May 30. Classes are June 6-August 1; every Saturday except July 4. Registration fee is $18, and classes are $10 each. Registration & classes held at the Youth Canteen, 1620 Middleton Street.
