T&D Staff Report

Oliver “Buddy” Pough was happy back on Feb. 4 when he believed his team had locked down star Pinewood Prep wide receiver Laquan Gilliard on National Signing Day.

“Laquan Gilliard is a real speed burner,” Pough said at the time. “He’s kind of in the style of Tre Young — he’s a tall, thin guy who can really fly.”

The receiver was named first team All-County Line by the Summerville Journal Scene and second team All-Lowcountry by The Post and Courier after recording 48 receptions for 913 yards and 11 touchdowns in the regular season. He capped off his year by hauling in seven passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns to lead the SCISA All-Stars past the North Carolina All-Stars, 29-16.

But Gilliard, who connected for two hits and two RBIs in Pinewood Prep’s 3-1 win over Northwoods Academy in the opening game of the SCISA Class AAA baseball state title series Monday, has chosen to attend Spartanburg Methodist College to play baseball.

A centerfielder/pitcher, Gilliard is batting .312 with six home runs and 25 RBIs for Pinewood Prep this season.

" I wish Laquan a successful career in baseball, but we sure could have used him on the Bulldog football team. Best luck from Reddawg... "
