Claflin athletes make SIAC All-Academic Team
By Claflin University Media Relations Saturday, May 30, 2009Claflin University athletes earned the second highest GPA in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference during the 2008-2009 school year, the SIAC announced this week.
A total of 43 student-athletes from Claflin had a combined GPA of 3.40, making them eligible for the SIAC Commissioner’s All-Academic Team. This is Claflin’s first year as members of the SIAC.
“We are very proud of our student-athletes who continue to demonstrate a commitment to excellence both on the playing field and in the classroom,” said Dr. Henry N. Tisdale, president of Claflin University. “Their desire to excel is commendable and it is in keeping with the university’s holistic approach to the growth and development of all students.”
The All-Academic Team is comprised of student-athletes in every sport from every member institution with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher. Highlighting this year’s list is over 360 student-athletes. Benedict College led the conference with 57 student-athletes with a combined GPA 3.45 and Tuskegee had 52 student-athletes with a combined GPA of 3.37. Claflin earned a second place spot despite not competing is football, golf and tennis.
Tennis was the sport with the highest combined GPA with a 3.50. Track & Field had the most student-athletes on the list with 110 students above a 3.0.
The Commissioner’s All-Academic Team was started at the conclusion of 2006-07 academic years to recognize all student-athletes in the conference who acquired or maintained a 3.0 GPA during their collegiate years. Claflin athletes making the team were:
