Post 4 suffers second loss to Newberry at home

It was definitely a tough pill for Orangeburg head coach Frank Leysath to swallow.

After watching his team will themselves back into two extra inning games earlier this week, Orangeburg Post 4 was unable to muster up their third win in as many days as they fell 9-2 to Newberry on Wednesday night at Mirmow field.

Things were going well for Orangeburg as it scored the first two runs of the game. However, the offensive work they put together slowly but surely came undone thanks to five errors.

Despite playing 22 innings in two days, Leysath doesn’t believe stamina was a factor in the game’s outcome

“If the score would’ve been 3-2,” Leysath said, “I might’ve said that. After the ball game, my words to (the players) were ‘It’s not that we lost. It was due to the lack of effort.’”

Post 4 (7-4) currently has three losses to League VIII opponents, two of which are at the hands of Newberry Post 24. Tonight, they look to bounce back on the road at 7 p.m. against Chapin-Irmo, the only other team that Orangeburg has not beat in league play. Leysath admitted that tonight’s game isn’t exactly do-or-die for his team, but he realizes its importance.

“My exact words to them were ‘For all those who can bring their A-game, be at Mirmow Field at 4 o’clock tomorrow,” he recalled. “If you can’t bring you’re A-game, you need to stay home.’”
