Following 28-run outburst Post 4 back in action tonight

No. It wasn’t a football score.

Yes. The Orangeburg Post 4 American Legion baseball team defeated Lexington 28-18 Monday night to improve to 9-4 in League VIII play.

“You know, we had 17 runs and were ahead 17-3 going into the bottom of the fourth innings,” Post 4 head coach Frank Leysath said. “Lexington has a good-hitting ball club. They hit the ball good, but their pitching is just adequate, I guess.”

Tyler Metts led the offensive onslaught for Post 4 with an inside-the-park grand slam and 6 RBI. Trez Wienges was 5-for-7 with six RBIs and Matt Arant had four RBI.

Leysath just hopes there’s some offensive firepower left over for tonight’s 7:30 p.m. home game at Mirmow Field against Chapin-Irmo. Chapin-Irmo (8-6) and West Columbia (8-5) trail Post 4 in the league standings. With that in mind, it’s likely Bamberg-Ehrhardt star Don Sandifer will take the mound for Post 4.

“We played (Chapin-Irmo) twice and we lost to them 3-2 and 4-3,” Leysath said. “This is a big game, obviously. Every game we have on the schedule from here on out is a big game until we clinch first place.

“Each game is important to us,” he said. “We need to win one at a time. IF we can win, basically, we won three last week. We are hoping to win three this week, and then three next week. If that’s the case, then nobody will catch us.”
